Just wondering if anyone has ever tried Sketchup. I've been tinkering around with it, off an on for years now. I come to realize, that they incorporated Sketchy Physics, all free of course. Seems really cool, as when you build and paint your 3D engine, it will actually run. The latest download is Sketchup 8. As of now, I'm studying the motion part and you can actually make a car run and steer around a board. Eventually I want to build a traction engine with chain drive. Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Doug

I used sketch-up to design the sand core for the casting in the Wallaby engine block I'm making.

For me, drawing a working version would be as big a challenge as building a fuel consuming version, just without the swarf.

If you have drawn any animations of simple engines in sketch up I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see them. th_wwp

I don't think you can do animations in the FREE version - you can do some change of scenes but that is not what I understand as animation.

Yeah, it's hard to begin using SketchUp, but for me it's a very good think to se the problems while schetcing and correct them there and NOT in the real world.

I've used it for many different projects on my house, electronics and machines - take a look on my web site:

I have played with Sketchup to make 3 dimensional models with some success, but I couldn't find a way to then use that model to make two dimensional drawings, with traditional views, to share or to build from. Is there a way to do that?

I haven't found in the free version - maybe in the PRO version ???

I just make a pair of prints with dimentions turned ON - that's good enough for me ;D but it's NOT a traditional view :-\

Sure is!

Select from the 'camera' menu option - 'Parallel projection'
then also in Camera menu select 'Standard Views'
this gives you the option of 7 views, one view for each 3d face plus isometric.

let us know how you go?
