I have attached an article (actually a compilation of articles) which explain Octane ratings, Pre-Ignition, Autoignition and various other problems that one encounters in high performance engines.

Whilst much of this may not be applicable to relatively low performance IC model engines, I have found it very usefull in explaining some of the wierder things that go on inside an IC engine.
