What is EN1A in the USA called?
And what may be the best material to build up a crank shaft?
Like the webs of 1/4" thick flat, the shaft 3/8 the whole thing will be silver soldered.

The closest alloy here in the US would be SAE 1137 steel.

It is a Free Cutting Carbon Steel.
It gains that free machining property from a higher
sulphur content.

That is a REAL advantage in the machining aspect, but it
does not accept a weld or solder as well as a standard
carbon steel such as SAE 1018 or EN3A

Here's a link you might find helpful. Sunflag Steel Applications

Hi
If your silver soldering En1a or its like add a little salt to the borax.
Try using meths to make the flux pate rather than distiled water it wets better and starts the fluxing a little faster.

cheers Kevin
