I thought Grizzly would get rid of the flat belt and go to V belt and raise the rpm on the Heavy 10.
No way could they make it in this country, labor is to high, to many man hours to build.

This is a picture of a South Bend Heavy 10 as made in 1967. Nothing like the China made item.
Grizzly purchased South Bend but did not make South bend lathes That made South bend great. After all the 10K had roots back in 1920 with 8 then in 1930 9N (9A, 9B and 9C) and then South bend in 1950 razed the 9 3/8' and call it the 10K this last in to 1990's it is still a good lathe today.

This weekend, the British TV carried the brief news that a 100 year old British born American serviceman had died. His brief claim to fame was that he was one of the Allied soldiers who freed the remaining 33,000 prosoners incarcerated in Dachau concentration camp on Austria. It didn't say that. the Yanks got there before the Russians-- but they did.
So what has this all to do with Emco? Well MY story is - well rather different. The start of my story is that on a winter's night in Arctic Norway- a man shoved a paper body bag under my arm. I was part of a small British team who had joined the Nordic nations to train in winter mountain rescue and winter survival.
Enough of me, he was one of Norway's Red Cross who were imprisoned in concentration calms--- and survived. Many of these inmates were slave labour- until they died but in the meantime they were engaged in war work making things like V1 and V2 rockets which created devastating damage mainly on London and the Home Counties. There was little to stop the 'doodle bugs' and nothing to stop the rockets. Later, I was to witness where two of the V1's had landed, exploded yards apart - on a Battle of Britain airfield. After the war ended, I slept in the remains of one building!
The Nazis had their labour camp in a place called Hallein and Hallein happened to be the Emco lathe factory-- and the lathes were obviously making the instruments in both terror weapons.
Wiki-whatsit or whoever depicts the story of the poor villagers being - bombed indiscriminately by the Americans. The difficulty was that the factories were buried in the salt mines and were bomb proof.

Grizzled has patterns from South bend and drawings. Let's not forget they had parts too.
Grizzlies can manufacturer South bend lathes than copy some else lathe.

Iy's rather refreshing to know that NEW parts are available for good old machinery. Myford are probably part reconditioning old-ish Super7'. Mine is 'as new' from the original Myford factory and has power cross feed and the integral gear box. None of it would appeal to the comedians that who have difficulty in discovering where they put their pocket book;)

Writing about castings reminds me that I am getting a superb addition for my lathe. In the 30's possibly, a firm on the English Lake District made specialist parts for Myfords. I had and have two spindles one for drilling and one for grinding which used - those rather nice line shafting with pulleys which don't slip:D
A few days ago, Another vertical height pillar tool calibrated with all sorts of divisions came up for sale.
Clearly, the owner knew 'something ' of its heritage and it was fitted with a Myford threaded nose and with a 9 9 row division plate.
The price was- a bit high and I e-mailed him. I negotiated a sensible and a little lower price. Well it is in Lathes.co.uk in the Potts description. What is is is that the Potts company made original machines completely but sold through their agents drawings and castings- presumably for those who could not afford the finished article. The firm moved from Edinburgh possibly 'bought out, the went bust and then Hemingwaykits who sell the revised Mk3 Quorn kit and lots of engine kits from Ned Westbury and Leonard Sparey.
So I am getting the thing- knowing exactly what its full potential is. Laughingly, I ordered 30 kilos(!) of assorted mild steel off cuts and a new supply of assorted sizes of round EN1A-- and the silly price will do all the missing pulleys and line shafting to use the round silicone belting which was left over after from my tool and cutter grinders. ( Back on topic, you see)

And then I feel rather pleased about the vaccine business from when I acquired shares in Imperial Chemical Industries which are know known as Astra Zeneca. So really, all this is free- or sort of.

wow, I had not seen a maximat super 11 clone before. It seems that south bend version has metric and inch dials and huge spindle bore. Also 3-phase motor with vfd allready installed is a huge plus. Also bigger MT spindle in the spindle and in the tailstock than the original had. Doesn't sound like a bad machine at all. Chinese made obviously but hopefully to a good standard. Anyone know if this is available in Europe through some other name or brand?

In these days of extreme difficulties with Covid-19, I really cannot see how you will get to the UK by car and go into 14 days quarantine prior to going shopping and into and out various Tiers of restrictions- always assuming that you can summon up enough money for more than the machine.
Best of Luck anyway!

Well, it came home with me.
I'm going over it, going to change the gear oil, iso 46, need to make a gasket for top gear head cover.
I'll be looking for a study rest, carriage stop, set of change gears and maybe 30 tooth gear.
I can't believe the apron doesn't run in oil.
I have a Shooting Star CBX (late 90's) read out, new in box never open that I might install.
Would I sell it...maybe...I'd have to give some of the money to my friend.

I know this is an older thread, I am curious, are you selling it or keeping it?
