Two years ago I decided to design/build a hit & miss engine using materials on hand that had accumulated over the years of model building. The project became a fun effort between other ongoing projects.
A few months ago I ran it for the first time, it started up and ran nicely with minor fiddling which for me was a first.
The material that had the most impact on the design type were pieces ½” 6061 aluminum plate (frame) , a bar of 2 ½” aluminum round (cylinder & head), a length of ½ x 1” 2024 aluminum (connecting rod), a length of 1 ½” square aluminum (gas tank), a length of 1 1/2” 1144 Sressproof (crank shaft) two 1 x 6” cast iron discs I had purchased years ago from Enco (flywheels), Cast iron round (piston & rings), odds and ends of bronze (governor system, Chuck Fellows carburetor, crankshaft counterweights & misc.), some local Tan Oak (base), and some nuts & bolts.
The engine bore, and eventual size, was mostly determined by some 1 ¼ I.D. aircraft tube left over from the cylinder of a Leon Riddenour ‘Ford’s first engine’ of which I had built three.
The ignition system is a Roy Sholl S/S CDI that I am using on ~15 engines.

Looks great, runs beautifully! How difficult is the math are you doing that you need a gun next to your calculator though (second video)? Or is it to keep the shop gremlins away maybe...
