Sadly I'm reporting the death of Don Ashton, author of books like Stephenson's and Walschaert's Gears and many other things fom his website.

He will be missed in locomotive circles especially and from me, as a friend of the family over many happy years

In one of the steam locomotive sites, there was half a dozen pages, plus one from one of the greatest world saxophone players. I simply spent a lifetime enjoying his wisdom and expertise.

Good idea. The loss of the person is of course incomparably more important ... but the loss of that person's years of wisdom and knowledge just adds one more layer.

Very sorry to hear this. I just ordered his book on Locomotive Valve Gear from Camden, but have not received it yet. The Live Steam community has lost a very important resource. Condolences to his family and friends!
