For woodworking, I try to use fixtures and stops for repeatable results when I mass produce parts. Not sure if it can be applied to metalworking.
and turret lathes are all about using stops.

even with modern cnc fixtures are also a great time saver . Some times the best way to hold a part.

For me it has to be a vernier caliper all the way. But at 26 years of age I can see that I have the advantage of young eyes (sorry chaps)

IN USAF tech school we had verier calipers the prior service students were allowed to bring there own dials or digital.

In the shop we had digitals for everyday use. The mobility box had dials.
They all work they are a useful tool and probably the most used measuring tool in the shop.

I still say if and when you need to measure in tenths use a micrometer.
Also keep in mind most of this thread is over 6 moths old and many of the posters may not even be active.

After looking at the simplicity of vernier calipers, il looking of a good set.
