One of my engine designs that is in the rough and tumble thought process is another V-twin and this is along the lines of a Hoglet and similar other V types. The cams would be individual and run in a gear case as do most models of this design format. Has anyone ever built individual lobes then secured them to a shaft then to a gear with silver solder? Most all Harley Davidson camshafts are gear/cam built using a blank and once the cam profile is established and ground the gear is then hobbed to the required pitch, etc. Seems to me this rather simple method of individual lobe building/drill shaft thru hole into lobe/ gear,would save the task of having to use a cam grinding fixture and gear cutting index to achieve a "solid one piece cam" This engine is about half the size of a Harley "Shovel Head" type engine, built using aluminum castings, bar stock and assorted mild steel. Any thoughts on this?
 
Make the shaft with an integral cam - you could easily build several of them identical, and then mount the gear to the shaft. It would be easier to pin and solder the gear than it would to pin and solder the cam. Also - but making the cam and shaft 1 piece the cam would be a lot easier to finish - it would have something to hold on to.
 
The hoglet has separate gear, shaft and then a sleeve that has the cam profile machined into it is loctited to the shaft, No reason you could not silver solder them if you wanted.

Locktite would be even better, because it provides a way to un-do it if you don't get things aligned quite right. Silver solder is rather permanent.
