Hello all!
I am currently sketching out plans for a weir style boiler feed pump for my WIP 3.5" gauge LBSC Virginia. This will obviously be rather small (ideally less than 3" or 76mm in height) and so far I think I can do it. The problem is that I am unsure to what the ratio should be between the bore of the steam cylinder and the bore of the pump cylinder to ensure it is able to produce enough over pressure to feed the boiler.

My current plan is as follows:
3/8" (9.53mm) cylinder bore for the power piston
1/4" (6.35mm) cylinder bore for the pump piston
1" (25.4mm) maximum stroke, although this may be reduced
1/16" (1.6mm) diameter water and steam passages

The steam chest will have two 'D' slide valves, one operating the main (shuttle) valve
The pump will be double acting using four 3/32" (2.4mm) ball valves in a 'water chest' to control flow
Max feed steam pressure will be 80 to 90Psi

Will these parameters do the job or do I need to decrease the pump bore and/or increase the power cylinder bore?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

syrtismajor,

IMHO your ratio of 3:2 is spot on.

Hope this helps

Best Regards
Bob

Cheers for the help!
I'll get round to making this soon and seeing if it works...
