Blackening Stainless Steer

I need to blacken 1mm stainless wire/rod. Suggestions please. It’s for handrails on a gauge 1 engine. It can't be painted as it has to slide through the handrail standoffs.

Not sure if the steer would stand still long enough, but I've heard good things from some gunsmith friends about using Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black on stainless steel gun parts. Might be worth a try.
