Can you shorten a scale on a DRO kit.

Dust and fingerprints are an issue. Anilam recommends to clean the scale with windex and lint free wipes if I remember correctly.

Can you shorten a scale on a DRO kit.

The anilam scales were very easy to cut down. Take off the end caps, pull out the rubber strips. The glass scale on these is held in with a long piece of nitrile rubber. Pull the rubber out and the glass will come out. Make note which side the engraving is on. Cut aluminum frame to length and...

    Cheap ballscrews - your advice/experience?

I have used those screws and nuts on a torch lifter on a plasma cnc. I wouldnt use one on a cnc. They are considerably rougher than the higher quality rolled screws. These are truly bottom of the barrel screws. I have picked up good ground screws off ebay for good prices.

Here"s what is needed for cnc

Here is a link to a site where they review the different non-commercial servo drives out there. http://www.thecubestudio.com/ServoDriveReview.htm I have personally used the Gecko servo drives and I would avoid them now that there are other, better, drives out that dont use the encoder hunt...

    Oregon Steam Up 2010

I have been there almost every year since I can remember, that would be probably since 78-79. Too young to remember much though. I think the big A-C steam engine is one of the first memories. Now I pretty much go there for the swap meet. I usually come away with all sorts of goodies, this year...

    Tormach cnc mill

Its only $7.5k if you buy the machine by itself. But once you add the options like a stand you are well into the 10k to 14k range. I have been to a couple auctions recently and you could pick up a Robomill that would take up the same space for about the same price as one of the Tormachs. Heck...

    I Hate 304 Stainless!

One of our members at TechShop brought in a chunk of what I thought was stainless 4" x about 10". Chucked it up in the Monarch Series 60 (15HP) with a 12" 3 jaw.. Couldnt hardly touch the stuff. Carbide just bounced off. And I was even supporting it with a steady! Think it must be inconel or...

    Fixture Plate

I got a set of fixture plates from Stevens engineering. New they are incredibly expensive. About $3k for the plate and about 1K for each vise sets. Luckily a friend of mine who does surplus was told about them and I got them for about 1/15th new price. Every other hole or so on these plates is...

    Show us your lathe

Here's my latest toy. Hercus Compulathe. Made in Australia. Very well made lathe. The controls were shot so I am replacing the control. Went ahead and replaced the old DC brush servos with new Mitsubishi brushless servos. The machine is about 85% done now. Waiting to get paid to get a...

    Raw materiel for casting ??

Its best to get alloys specific to casting. They pour better. Alloys that are inteded to be formed are different and can have issues. As long as you start with cast scrap you should be fine though for most things. Another problem with alu cans is that they turn to mostly oxide when they melt...

How/what to replace the 'oil button'

I use the eagle oilers like here on ebay: I have two of these and they work great with the ball oilers. They can really put some oil under pressure. Thats one advantage over the standard Gits oilers. You can get some pressure in there. Gits oilers rely on gravity.

    TechShop Portland

You dont need to be a member to take any classes. FWIW, we are on own from the Menlo Park location and Jim. We are doing our own thing. The original plan to open locations all over was premature on their part and thats why we and the Durham locations are the only ones coming to fruition...

??? Who did you talk to? When? To someone at the portland location? We have already traded equipment for membership. That how we got the Series 60 Monarch. The less we have to spend on equipment the better. As for the SBU (Safety and Basic Usage), Its a two fold subject. First is safety. 99% of...

    Eco fan

Those thermocouples are still used in almost every live pilot gas appliance. Best bet thy are just using a generic peltier (Thermo Electric Cooler, TEC) in the junction between the base and the heat sink. TECs are getting pretty cheap.
