Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Hi Chuck. With your fixture for the collet chuck, was it difficult to bore the steel block for the bearings without runout or misalignment? I'm still trying to decide if it's easier to use pillow block bearing units (although they're more expensive)?

    Casting kit measurements

I just revisited this post as I'm intending to start building something more complicated than the EZ. I've noticed that pretty much every fastener below M4, except for hex head screws can be purchased in Australia. Has anyone found a supplier of M2-M3 hex heads? Apart from the absence of...

    Small cast iron melting furnace

100model. I'm also in victoria. I have a bag of hard refractory cement, would that work as the only lining? or do i really need kaowool or similar to provide enough insulation for cast iron melts? where do you purchase your crucibles?

    CTC Tools

I need to purchase some items from CTC tools. The place based in Hong Kong. - Lathe tool holders and inserts -drill chucks, Collet chucks -solid carbide end mills, slot drills I'm a bit weary of cheap measurement tools and perhaps the gauge blocks they sell. also their carbide cutting tools...

First engine (HMEM EZ of course)

Correct but I have a large drill press with a compound table. it does okay for very light duty milling. with a collet chuck

And the slightly embellished flywheel. I might paint the indented part of it.

First engine (HMEM EZ of course)

My first engine. Decided to modify the design a little. Just hacksawed and filed out the legs. Two M3 screws through the base.

    ubiquitous 101 piece drill sets

Went for the the SM 30 for now and glad I did. No runout and cut very well.

    ubiquitous 101 piece drill sets

I updated my profile. I am in Australia where everything is more expensive than in the US and UK. Actually I'm looking for a metric set which is 101 piece (115 was a typo), 1 to 10mm in 0.1mm rise, 10 to 13 in 0.5 rise. locally, I can also get 1 to 5.9 and 6 to 10 in separate sets. Sutton...

    ubiquitous 101 piece drill sets

Anyone had any experience with these drill sets? they appear to be fairly common on eBay. I can't seem to bring myself to drop enough Cash on the equivalent Sutton SM99 at $400 is more than double the price.

    pedestal drill VFD

Just purchased a used (almost new, actually) three phase pedestal drill specifically to add a variable frequency drive (VFD) for easy speed adjustment. haven't taken delivery yet. This is the same model: http://www.wotol.com/1-machtech-bd35-drilling-machine/second-hand-machinery/prod_id/982862...

    short-term corrosion prevention

Just wondering what people use for rust prevention of tools and machine surfaces they often use? It is my understanding that products like CRC 3-36, Fluidfilm, LPS-3 etc are what you put on if you don't intend on using the tools for a long time. also they need to be cleaned off with WD-40 or...

    Casting kit measurements

I'm just wondering if the majority of casting kits available use fractional measurements and BA taps, drills etc? is that just part and parcel of the model engineering hobby ( unless of course designing your own)? I work in metric and have metric taps mainly. I have metric and imperial...

Is CNC the solution for me?

That being said I imagine I'd use stainless only 15% of the time, mild steel a similar amount & the rest nonferrous metals. so my primary decision would not be based on stainless.

    Are my lathe tools strange?

I'm just trying to find a cheaper source of extra tool holders, $50 is a little steep for each one. it's actually not bad managed to do 4mm cuts without any rigidity problems. I need to make a new handle for it because the current handle is fouling on the height adjustment screw. Are...
