Finally got back into the workshop

More bits done, yet even more swarf but then that is to be expected Got the crank sorted out it is a made up one and according to the drawing is held together with high strength epoxy but I have used Loctite 620 and once set drilled and pinned probably not needed but it made me feel better. Also...

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

One thing you could check (if the carb is as a full size one ) SU's used thin oil as a damper in the top of the piston guide and if the wrong oil (to thick) was used it would slow the reaction time of the piston and give poor performance Paul

Finally got back into the workshop

Got going on the Base / fuel tank (yet another bag of swarf to go for recycling) cut out all the inside and did a rebate for the bottom plate ( to be TIG welded in ) then onto my adjustable angle plate to do the 5 degree tapered outsides Paul

Finally got back into the workshop

Got onto the crankcase which involved a lot of metal removing (thank God for ripper cutters) and at the same time to remember what bits to leave . One thing that came to light was because I had to use a 1/4" cutter for the internals the radius at the front corners interfered with the cylinder...

Finally got back into the workshop

Hard at it again today, got the inside milled out to give 1/8" wall then shaped a 2.5mm piece for the top plate and TIG welded all round then filed the radius around the outer edge. I can't do the mounting holes yet as these have to spotted from the crankcase, and I want to do the liner as this...

    Welding a copper boiler?

That is another reason for using the correct grade of stainless material and filler material and the correct weld procedure, I'm afraid a lot of people see stainless as a one off shiny material and do not realise how many grades there are, the same applies for machining such as 303 is a free...

    Welding a copper boiler?

Hi Peter yes I never got an answer around 15yrs ago I put the same question to a UK model forum and got loads of you can't do that, so I questioned their reasoning as to why and got the following responses 1. Chloride attack at the water line 2. When a copper boiler lets go it bursts a stainless...

My boiler was tested to the requirements of the Southern federation Boiler inspectors for 7 1/4" gauge so it came under the UK 2x WP For ASME min, test psi =1.3 x MAWP at test temp, x lowest stress at test temp, to stress at design temp it doesn't state a maximum test psi

I thought you would get to the main reason, yes only 5mm wall and not 1/4" (please note my boiler was made using shed 40 so had a wall of 7.11mm) I didn't use the slot weld (used a full pen, T butt ) All welds where they was a through the shell bush were tophat so the bushes were stepped and...

Just to go back to the early posts about using published designs for boilers I found some pictures of my finished Shay boiler (sorry about the quality of the pic's as I couldn't find the pic's on this computer they are in some storage device around the house, so had to go to the other forum that...

Finally got back into the workshop

Made a start on the cylinder block, squared up the ends and one side (the reason for only doing the ends and one side was once marked out for the ends all the rest of the sides will be profiled on the mill.) The mandrel allows me to face the ends for mounting the cylinder to the crankcase and...

No they were 4.0mm you could not have done it at 190A with the access and the rod angle you wouldn't control the weld pool that is the top whack for a 4.0mm low hydrogen They tend to run across the range of 120-190 depending on what you are trying to do (Amperage ranges can vary slightly with...
