    Carolina Bandsaw Restoration

Yes you should have a descent control cylinder, mine came loose with the machine. You may find this parts list and diagram either useful or depressing, depending on how much is missing. http://www.carolinaequipment.com/page/partsdiagram

    Carolina Bandsaw Restoration

I have one of those myself, bought it a year or so ago off ebay as a non-runner (needs a motor and wiring) cheap at $150. Its sitting in the corner waiting until I get a round tuit. I'll be interested in following your progress.

    which grade stainless steel?

My only experience with stainless (apart from the shafts out of dead printers which turn beautifully) is with 1.5" 316 round. Its tough, but it turned threaded and parted well for me with carbide, and drilled and tapped OK with HSS.

    info needed for turning excentric

lordedmond, seeing that you have ER collets, make yourself one of these gizmos. I find it very handy for turning offsets in the 4 jaw, especially on smaller stock that would otherwise be a PITA to hold properly in a 4 jaw.

Buying cutter grinder direct from China?

You really need to do your homework to determine your final landed cost when importing this type of gear, there can be lots of gotchas for the uninitiated. If you are quoted a price including freight there will still be handling costs at your end. If the item comes in by air (expensive...

    Heat Treating metal.

This is an interesting subject, but the jury is still well and truly out. http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/cryogenics-140883/

    Cherry Red available in Australia

Will do, no problems. Which reminds me of a joke that's doing the rounds at the moment. "I phoned the local model shop and asked them if they had a model of the Costa Concordia. They said they had one left so I asked them to put it on one side for me."

Centering Parts On A Rotary Table

Whichever method of centring you use, you will need to fine tune a little even after you have it set up super dooper dead nuts. Making your straights and radii blend seamlessly using a rotab can be quite difficult, especially if you're making a full 180° sweep on the end of a piece of flat, you...

New to group, New to boiler making.

Get hold of a copy of the Australian Standard for miniature boilers, lots of very useful info there http://www.pnc.com.au/~wallison/AALS/AMBSC/AMBSC.htm

    Case hardening question

You would probably have found that your cam lobes, if made from 1018 would have worn surprisingly quickly. Cherry Red works well when hardening mild steel, I've used it myself to good effect. After you have dipped the lobes in the powder hold them at red hot for about 3 minutes before quenching.

Making lathe from scratch and using mild steel plate? Why use cast iron?

Casting is a very cost effective way for industry to produce the heavy rigid & complicated metal shapes that are required for lathes and mills, once the patterns are made, a mould can be prepped and poured in 30 minutes or so. Compare that to the many hours required to cut the necessary shapes...

    Aluminium grade

This chart shows the general characteristics of different grades of aluminium. In the real world though (Australia anyway) only 6060 and 6061 grades are normally available, with 2011 sometimes available in rounds...

Small 10-20-40 blocks that actually work.

Sir John, there are a couple of things I've wondered about 123 blocks as they were manufactured, you have your ear to the ground so you may know the answers. One is, why didn't someone with access to a manufacturer whisper in their shell pinks many years ago that it would make good commercial...

ER Collets for my South Bend

You can make a perfectly adequate ER32 collet holder on the lathe without using a grinder. This is one I made a while ago, I got .02mm, 8 tenths of a thou TIR 50mm from the chuck. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=33587

    Lead Thumpers

I made up a batch of lead hammers a while ago, 2 kg head, 2.5kg all up including the handle. I had some lead left over from a long ago project and rather than sell to the scrappy, I thought I would 'value add' (I believe that is the current economic buzz term) and turn the lead into hammers to...

    Face Mill

I've bought from CTC several times and have never been disappointed, and as a bonus their stuff comes in the cutest little parcels. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=50810 An update on the cutter I mentioned back in June in post 25. I've given that cutter a lot of work since...

    The Drill Doctor

I have the 750X, and while it is useful its definitely not fool proof, I do need to keep an eye on it. Cleanliness of the chuck is one thing, the other is have the adjustment screw so that you have the shortest amount of drill bit sticking out of the chuck and yet still reach the grinding wheel...

Tapping size hole for 1 1/8 whitworth

If the tap is readily available, and because its an important thread, I would be single pointing that to 90/95% and finishing with the tap.
