    Pamper those tools and instruments...

Neat trick that - and for those of us in the UK, Aldi have expanding foam on 'special' this Thursday (£3.99 per 750ml)

    Harold Hall's precision grinding table

That's all looking great - fantastic finish to the parts When cutting the dovetails what sort of depth of cut did you take on each pass and what speed did you run the cutter at Cheers

The Center of a RoTab...how to make it work for me?

What is the headstock taper of your lathe ? Can you not just pop an arbor in the headstock and drill Apologies if this is stating the obvious or if your lathe doesn't have a taper but sometimes these things get overlooked :)

    Boring Head Shanks

Hi guys Just an update on this, I've given up on trying to separate the shank, it got to the point where I had the shank gripped in the vice a 5' bar in the head and it still refused to budge - I have since seen a similar head on Ebay and it would appear that the shank may be a press fit with a...

    Boring Head Shanks

This thing really is stuck in well ! By putting a couple of pieces of square bar in the cut-outs on the shank, I can now get a good death grip of the shank in my big vice. For a tommy bar I'm using my 3/4" socket wrench breaker bar, the handle end of which fits just about perfect (although the...

    Boring Head Shanks

Hi all I recently picked up an Elliott boring head, but as usual I didn't bother to look closely enough at the pic on the listing and now that it's arrived what I assumed was a MT3 taper shank is actually a 3/4" straight shank. Was hoping that this would be a simple swap but the shank seems to...

    Should I get a shaper

Thanks to all that replied, but sorry to report that I've decided to let it go. Although I'm sure it would be useful I think that it will end up getting in the way and cause me more grief than it solves. It's a shame but sometimes you just have to take the practical view :( Cheers Jim

    Should I get a shaper

I've been offered a shaper at a great price but I'm undecided if I should go for it !! main concern is that space is an issue in my workshop (just a single garage) I could just about squeeze it in but it would make things pretty tight. I've seen Artie's posts on his shaper, in his cavenous...

    Is my mill past it?

Well I emailed ISCAR yesterday asking them what they made their toolholders from and got a reply this morning, apparently they use EN24 but they didn't mention if they harden them or not. Did a quick google search and EN24 would appear to be pretty tough stuff so think that probably confirms...

    Is my mill past it?

Thanks Dave, that's what I wanted to hear (sort of !) At least I know it's probably not me that's the issue - for once :) Downside is I've got to work out another way of getting these things to fit on my lathe - thinking I was being clever I bought 3 of them plus inserts. May try carbide...

    Is my mill past it?

Thanks again for the input Vic - is there any way to determine how hard the steel is, I can't get my head round why a hacksaw seems to breeze through it but the cutter struggles. Obviously the hacksaw is much thinner but I thought hardened\tough steel would present just as much a challenge to...

    Is my mill past it?

Hi all I've made some progress on this, somone on another forum suggested that it might be the spindle bearings but I think I've ruled that out. Running for 10mins plus and I can't fel any heat in the spindle and pushing/pulling a chuck mounted in the spindle only registered 0.0025 movsment on...

    inexpensive digital readout

Also looks similar to the one I got from Warco http://www.warco.co.uk/Digital-scale-with-attached-remote-readout-32C4E98774.aspx I love mine, readout is very neat and compact but still easy to read, much nicer than the unit I got from ArcEuroTrade which is almost impossible to read unless...

    Is my mill past it?

Hi Tin Thanks for replying The toolholder is an unknown steel but I would guess it's a high carbon, as said it doesn't appear to be hardened I was using a 2 flute cutter as effectvely the first cut at each depth was a slot and I made sure to use conventional milling when widening this slot to...

    Is my mill past it?

Evening all, I've got some issues with my milling machine and am hoping that the expertise here can point me in the right direction. Although I've owned my Elliott Omnimill for almost a year it's only recently that I've actually started to use it ! When I bought it I knew that it had seen some...

    Shortening toolpost

Twmster, you're right in that shortening the toolpost won't affect the centre height of the tool itself. The problem is that the toolholder will just about be at the right height if it sits on the crosslide, however when it's that low down on the toolpost the piston is only acting on the top...

    Shortening toolpost

I've picked up a new (to me) Atlas 10F lathe today and although it's the same as my current one it has a T-slotted cross slide which I think will be much more useful. The only downside is that the crosslide sits about 7mm higher than the old one and I'm going to struggle to get some of my insert...

Equivalent of Vitrea 37 Oil ??

I've just noticed that the oil level on my Elliott Omnimill is showing slightly low and a quick look at the manual recommends either Shell Vitrea 37 or Mobil Vactra Heavy, neither of which appear to be readily avilable locally. From what I can see Vactra Heavy is a ISO100 which I think equates...

    Assembling a chuck

My new (to me at least) lathe came with a couple of spare chucks and out of curiosity I've taken one apart to see how it works. It all seems pretty simple so I've also taken the opportunity to give it a good clean. On reassembly should I be using any oil or grease on the rear of the scroll, back...
