    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

It does sound better with a load on it, the knock it has gets quieter. I was thinking the same thing about the capacitor. I'm not sure what to do with the LED... Make a lamp post or build a model of a shop and light it up.... I'll have to see how many LEDs it will light up.

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

I did a little more work to the PM engine. I wanted this engine to actualy do something so I bought a little "generator" and LED kit. I did a quick mock up to see if it would work and it looks like I can continue with this little project.

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

I would say yes, it is pretty simple. A bit more advanced than a wobbler or oscilating engine, mostly because of the adjustable timing. It has been a fun build. That and I'm a perpetual newbie and was able to get it to run without to much fuss.

Steam Engine Plans There are a bunch of plans on this site. http://www.john-tom.com/MyPlans/Steam%20Engines/PopMechanicsBoiler1963.pdf This is a link to the boiler plans Hopefully the links above work. It's to John-Tom engine plans. I did find a problem with the plans. The connecting rod for...

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

I found the plans a bit of a challenge to follow, constantly bouncing back and forth between the text and the drawings to get all the dimensions and details needed for the build. I did make a minor change. Instead of soldering the eccentric in place I extended the end of the crank and threaded...

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

After only a few minutes of run time I was able to drop the pressure down to less than 10 psi according to the gauge on my little HF compressor. 15 PSI should be plenty. Being my first boiler it did take a few tries to get the heat right and enough steam to run the wobbler. I have plans and most...

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

It's running on compressed air for now. I did build the boiler and fired it up, my first boiler build. The safety valve did blow little bubbles while it was running but it was able to build enough pressure to run a wobbler. The safety valve did seem to work, I pressurized the boiler with air...

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

It's a runner! Shortening the rod did the trick. I tried downloading a video but got this message " The uploaded file does not have an allowed extension. " It had a bit of a knock at first but played with the timing of the eccentric made it much better. There is still work to be done but I...

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

Working through the dimensions in the plans, I've come up with the connecting rod being .25" longer than it should be... The distance from the centerline of the crankshaft to the top of the steam chest is about 2.8". The distance from the top of the valve piston to the centerline of the crank at...

    Popular Mechanics 1963 engine

Has anyone built this engine? http://www.john-tom.com/MyPlans/Steam%20Engines/PopMechanicsEngine1963.pdf I'm in the process of building this and have most of the parts completed. The first problem I'm having is the Valve piston hitting the top of the steam chest with the eccentric at bottom...

I for one would like to see how you constructed the piston and cylinder. Job well done. Thm:

    Lathe strobe

Thanks for the explanation. So it is more of a wood lathe application that could also be used on a metal lathe.

    Lathe strobe

I'm missing something  What is the benefit of the strobe other than making a cool video to market your cutting tools?

    Flycutter tool

In my limited experience the rounded cutter gives a better finish. My first attempt at fly cutting I used a cutting tool I had ground for the lathe it gave a very poor finish. A search found the same thread Basement Guy posted, following those instructions I can get a mirror finish fly cutting...

    Starrett 196 back plunger kit

That could be, but there is another shorter rod that does not have the ball on the end.

    Starrett 196 back plunger kit

I found this in a pawn shop today, at $40 it seemed like a good deal. I have one question, what is the ball end used for on the end of the rod I have sitting outside the box. Thanks in advance!
