    New Stand for 4x6 Bandsaw

I came into one of the lld Craftsman steel stands that were popular back in the 1950s and decided to repurchase it for my 4x6 bandsaw. These are pretty nice stands and fairly common around here. I simply mounted it by passing a piece of 3/8 ready rod through the holes in the base and than...

Color Casehardening: A photo and video tutorial

I have had some people request that the broken Photobucket links be fixed on this old thread, seems like everything is now working. Hope it helps someone. Regards, Alex Johnson

    Inexpensive Work Bench

Work benches don't have to be expensive. I found this old, solidly built kitchen cabinet. After minor repairs and painting I placed a 2" thick piece of maple that had been someone's kitchen island. I trimmed it down to size and to cover up what remained of a sink cutout on one end I inletted a...

New drill press and scroll saw

Picked these up and am in the process of cleaning them up a bit. Both Delta. The first is a 14" drill press while the second is a 24" scroll saw with a variable speed drive which I plan on using as a light die filer. Have less than $200 total in both of them together.

    New Craftsman Lathe

Just got it mounted this afternoon. Lucked out and got a really heavy steel bench that I refinished. I want to change the belts out to powertwist ones and install a drum switch, still have z few parts to make/find but it is getting closer. Here is a picture of my mini lathe bench in the lab. I...

    New Craftsman Lathe

Thanks for the info. The lathe only had the gears that were attached; however, I bought another one yesterday for about the same price that had a complete set of gears and also some other accessories with it (extra 3 and 4 jaw). This one is also missing a couple parts but between the two of them...

    New Craftsman Lathe

Just picked this one up the other day. It came with both 3 and 4 jaw chucks, faceplate, lathe dogs, live and dead centers, and several drill chucks with MT1 mounts. I also think it has the original 1/3 horse motor. I am missing a few small parts (did find the rest of the lantern tool post parts...

A color case hardened & charcoal blued machinst hammer

I thought I would share a couple photos of the projects that my students did this semester. Take the common machinist hammer project that most of us have done at one time or another and add a bit of bone and charcoal color casehardening and charcoal bluing and it turns out quite nice I think...

That is very nice work, I am partial to the Sharps action and own a couple Shiloh's. I would be nice to see the completed rifle.

    KNIFE BLADES....Hand-Filing of Bevels

Your enthusiasm is good, but the advice you received regarding the leaf springs is worth heeding. Old springs often do contain micro fractures which can go undetected until after the knife is finished and well I understand the frugality factor, 5160 steel is dirt cheap, easy to work and heat...

Color Casehardening: A photo and video tutorial

Your colors came out very nice, I particularly like the first Sharps shown, who did the engraving? I do feel as the one who started this thread several years ago that has now received close to 70,000 hits, that a word of caution is in order. I have studied this process for several years and...

Color Casehardening: A photo and video tutorial

Hello, Thank you for the compliments. I submitted my paper recently to the International Journal of Modern Engineering (IJME). It will need to go through the peer review process before any word is given on possible acceptance, but it is an open access journal so it will be available if...

    DIES HSS or Carbon Steel

One thing I have learned is that a good quality tap whether it is made of HSS or Carbon Steel generally work fine. I do prefer taps made from plain old carbon steel simply because you can often shatter them if they break off in a hole, with HSS you either have to be ingenious and figure a way to...

Color Casehardening: A photo and video tutorial

Hello, My experience has been that the best colors seem to happen when the water displaces and than comes crashing around the part at all sides, you are correct that the cap does have this effect. I have also found anyway that you can keep the charcoal in contact with the part longer will help...

Color Casehardening: A photo and video tutorial

This is an example of a type of crucible that I use. I am not at home at the moment, but put this sketch together so you can see. Introducing the parts to the quench is critical, but sometimes it is nice to be able to displace the water and than have it crash around the parts from the sides...

Color Casehardening: A photo and video tutorial

Thank you. The mix in this instance was about a 50/50 ratio of wood to bone. Changing the proportions of the mix will have some impact, but how you introduce the contents of the crucible to the quench and how they are prepared makes a huge difference also. One thing that I do is to wrap the...

Thought some of you might be interested in this. This is a large throwing knife made out of 3/8 inch mild steel plate that I color case hardened using the same process that I described at the beginning of this thread. The knife measures about 14 inches long and just one ounce shy of 2 pounds and...

    Workshop layout 8ft x 12ft

My shop layout is 27 x 12 feet. I have wood tools in the area, but they mainly are used for prepping gun stock blanks. Once the profile has been cut with the bandsaw and the edges squared all the inletting and shaping is done with hand tools so there isn't much dust created. I do a fair...

    Planning a new shop space

Based on some suggestions I did some revisions to the space. I think the new arrangement should give more use to the area. I don't have a dust collection system in the basement because the type of work I do there is mainly gun related. I have the bandsaw and jointer to prepare stock blanks, but...

    Planning a new shop space

You are right about the metal chips, but I really don't have any other place to fit the machine tools at the moment. My solution is to religiously sweep/vacuum up the chips and than change into different shoes before leaving the area.
