    3D Tutorial (Solidworks)

The excel part is different and it is covered well (much better than I could) in a tutorial in the Productivity Enhancement section titles Design Tables. Design tables are in excel and can do anything that excel can do just be aware of the formating requirements of SW. (All listed in the help...

    3D Tutorial (Solidworks)

The parametric nature of either pattern tools (feature or sketch) can be used to your advantage. I tend to use the sketch pattern tool for hole patterns. The cool thing is that you can define the pattern many different ways each having it's own advantages. Start with an 5 x 1 linear sketch...

    3D Tutorial (Solidworks)

It's the York compound from Elliott Bay. Dims are HP 3in, LP 5.25in and stroke 3.75in. My point was that many of these commands simply aren't needed in SW sketches or have better ways of accomplishing the task. Many of the reasons that you might divide a line in a sketch simply don't exist...

    3D Tutorial (Solidworks)

I don't know what tools you are looking for in sketching but I find that SW is a very powerful and fast sketching tool. I think that you may be getting hung up on grips and how it is done in 2d. I personally, never draw with the grid as I find it annoying, but I know those that do. Sketching in...

    3D Tutorial (Solidworks)

I started reading this thread with interest as I'm a long time user of Solidworks and was curious as to how a new user would approach Solidworks. May be I can offer a few tips that may help... You will find that there is no need to use another 2d program to do the sketching before importing...

How do you keep them shiny

I've had good luck with this so far. I've been using it for about a year and the parts that were treated early on still look pretty good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_Wax Ken

    Studding in blind holes

Hey all, Studs are appropriately used where: - The cost of replacing or repairing a damaged thread is high. example: A casting or other complex/ expensive part - Assembly is made easier by being able to use the stud to "hang" or locate a part on before bolting up. - Multiple parts are bolted...

    Technical Drawing/Drafting Software

Try this, I am a Solidworks user that occasionally needs to edit Autocad files so I have been using the PC version of Draftsight. I see that there is a MAC version and it's free (for now?) http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/download-draftsight/ Cheers Ken

Hooked on "Miser" Stirling by Jerry Howell

I made Jerry's Miser as my first engine two years ago. If you can build yourself an airplane you can build this engine. I left out some of the detail on the column because I thought it beyond my skills at the time and didn't want to buy more tooling than I already needed to buy. If you screw up...

    APOLOGISE

Thanks for the thoughtfull reply. PS, I like your avatar. Here is why I think this is interesting and then I'll shut up. Really this time. So far the leaning is that it's OK to make a copy for yourself and not for someone else. Here is why that argument is flawed in this particular instance...

    APOLOGISE

I fully understand that it against the forums rules to ASK for copyrighted material and that is a self imposed forum rule and don't get me wrong, I am good with that. I'm not trying to change the rules, but I think this is a good conversation to have. What I take exception with is; someone...

    APOLOGISE

Ian, Please show me exactly what language permits copies for personal use in US law. There is no specific (or implied) language in the US copyright code that makes an exception for personal use. There is an exemption for personal use copies of MUSIC made to cassette tape but it doesn't apply to...

    APOLOGISE

After much research, I'll grant that "by the letter of the law" transferring copyrighted material to a third party is against the law. But as far as I can find, there is no exception for copying PRINTED material for your OWN use either. There is one for audio (music) but it doesn't seem to apply...

    APOLOGISE

Jerry, That's a very good point. when true protection is needed a patent is in order (or trade secret). The clause is used on prints for machined parts going to outside vendors. It's basically a warning; Share this without our permission and we'll sic our lawyers on you. :o. It's a claim on...

    APOLOGISE

Yes, it appears to be specific, But it doesn't override the fair use doctrine. It's fair use to copy a print provided you have rights to use the ideas contained therein. I don't think that a court would uphold a claim that a holders rights were violated when one is using information that one is...

    APOLOGISE

drileyeng, As I see it there is no need to apologize. While it was appropriate that you were asked to verify that you owned the castings and actually were entitled a copy of the prints it isn't illegal to copy prints. Copyright violation is determined by the USE of the copy, not the act of...

    Brazing Hearth

My hearth is just fire bricks laid out in a 3x3 (I think) pattern and placed into an angle iron frame. I bought angle iron (steel) from the local DYI store, mitered the corners to a length to frame the fire brick. Cut strap to support under the fire brick seams (Strap is same thickness as a leg...

    Coolant pump

I'm using a tile saw pump. Replacements are available from your local DIY store appr $30. I figured if it could handle the junk floating around in the sump of a tile saw it could be used in my Bandsaw sump with no problems (so far, so good)! :big:
