CNC Mach 3 Parallel port replacement

The major change in Mach4 is that it uses a motion control device not the PC to do the realtime work. The most common device is the Ethernet connected SmoothStepper. Any function of a parallel port is long gone..

    Pond at cabin fever

I will also be bringing a couple boats. I talked to Gary a while ago and he is thinking about returning the pond to the front hall where it was the first couple years. The dirt pile guys are bringing a bunch of new guys this year and they need more room. I am really ready for this- I love shows...

SIEG KX-1 KX-2 parallel interface board repair/replacement suggestions

I have re-wired a couple of the KX1 machines to use one of the common parallel port breakout boards. I have used both PMDX boards and CNC4PC boards. Either work fine. Just remove the current board and mount the new one in its place, then rewire to the current steppers. The spindle speed control...

    Help with Rider Ericson casting

If that is the same engine I bought from Myers it is cast aluminum. Silver solder will not work. Good epoxy it the only choice. I would use JB Weld.

What have you been doing today?

I have been building a railroad coach. This is a replica, as accurate as we can make it, of the firs coach owned by the WW&F Ry, in 1894. There were two coaches, we have one still in service but the other was scrapped in the 1950's. We have been working on this for a couple years now, have...

Where to buy HT wire for spark plug in mainland Europe?

I have used a coax cable, like RG58 for spark plugs. Strip off the outer insulation and the braided shield. That leaves a conductor of about the right diameter for model spark plug wire. Coax should be common from any electrical supplier.

    R.I.P. Dale Detrich

Sad news indeed. Dale was a very prolific builder and always fun to talk to at NMES. We are loosing to many of the old timers in this hobby.

    NYLON MILLING MACHINE GEARS

Grind a fly cutter bit to the shape you need. Then cut metal gears. If you don't have an index head use the plastic gear as a guide.

    Wrong way fly cutter

I once made a tap, I think it was a 10-36 for a spark plug. I made a right hand thread, but cut the flutes for left hand cutting. It took me a minute or two to understand why it was not cutting threads.

Metal spinning on a mini lathe

Very nice work, thanks for posting. That is something I have wanted to try.

Simple way of getting a near tight sliding fit on piston and bore?

If you dont care which part becomes smaller it might work. But I would not call it lapping, it is simply wearing one part out to fit the other. The harder part is the one that will wear- the grit will embed into the softer part and cut the harder one

For Sale Selling my dad's shop - Bridgeport, Linley Jig Borer, Southbend Lathe, Craftsman/Atlas Lathe, Deckel Grinder, Meteor Drill Sharpener

You are at a disadvantage with machines in central VT- that is not exactly the center of the machine tool world. I live on the coast in Maine and have the same problem. I have told my wife about Gary Schoenly and Cabin Fever auction. I have come to know Gary pretty well and trust him to be...

For Sale Selling my dad's shop - Bridgeport, Linley Jig Borer, Southbend Lathe, Craftsman/Atlas Lathe, Deckel Grinder, Meteor Drill Sharpener

You might consider calling Gary Schoenly, of Cabin Fever Expo. He will come up and get an entire shop and run it through the auction. He will either pay one price up front, or will pay the proceeds of the auction. He has been in Maine several times to collect shops. Check their web site for...

    Canned air is extremely explosive...

I always was fascinated by naptha engines used in boats. They used the naptha not only to make the heat, but as the working fluid in the boiler. This was done to get around laws that required licenses to operate a boiler. Boilers were defined as steam and water items, so naptha was not against...

    Let's talk cutter grinders

If you are making it for yourself there is no need t o buy metric taps, just adjust the threaded features to taps you do have. Likewise a a 120v motor, even a 12v DC motor, can be substituted for 220v motor.

    SQUARE FOUR ENGINE.

Thats cool. And what a strange sound. At first it sounds like a rock crusher, then you get to hear the beat. I dont quite see how the intake valve works. Is it in a manifold off the side of the head?
