    Bernay build - MZT

Another eccentric strap Here’s the plates, already cut (and fastened) to the central line. I’ve centered the RT under the spindle, then fitted the support plate and drilled four holes in it for the holding screws. Now, I will mill the bearing area to size, then cut the external shape adding...

    Stuart No. 4 build

John, that same problem I will have the day I will bring the Bernay(s) to completion. Not yet decided whether I should fit a supplementar bearing to the wood base or make a metal plate to put both the engine and bearing on. If I took the additional trouble of making a split bearing, eventual...

    Torx screw

The commercial insert holders and mills I have use Torx screws ranging from M3 to M4, including the uncommon M3.5. Before scrounging the commericial ones, I had made some holders using commercial M3 and M4 socket head screws I had in the drawers, having tapered the bottom of the head. Definitely...

Steam Chests Yesterday I finally got around drilling and tapping the holes for the valve stems and steam intakes into the steam chests, wonder why I postponed this simple task so long. Here’s a picture of the two of them, patiently (not sure about that!) waiting for me to make and fit the...

Accurate cross holes - without a jig.

That steel rule trick works also for aligning the rotary table with the spindle. Another way of centering the rod horizontal into the vice, using the dro, is by chucking a straight rod in the mill: You touch one side and zero the dro, then halve the reading You get when touching the other side...

    Lathe Chuck Backstop

I like those knurled knobs! No more hunting for the correct wrench to break the tightening bolt due to overtorquing. Mine has the same dimensions as Yours: M10 bolt to tighten the spindle clamp, and I'm using the 'spare' M6 nut and washer to lock the stop. Marcello

    Bernay build - MZT

Dave, now I'm confused (and worried) too!!! Aint much sure about what parts You're referring to :( (A) Should be the journals, (B) the throws and (C) I cannot name them at the moment, but I'm sure I've come across that term before. Whatever.. (A)s are already to size as are (C)s, while...

    Bernay build - MZT

Alum. Bernay Taking shape Had to solve a slight binding into the piston rods inserts, due to not enough side clearance into the rectangular slots : now I think of it, I never cared checking their dimensions with the drawings while making them (…) ::) A few strokes with a round file (green...

Yet another Quick Change Tool Post

I'm surprised they lasted so long! (and still show no signs of wear) Made them in alu because at the time it was the only material I had in suitable sizes: with the intent of leaving a little more beef into the less robust item, I inverted the dovetails positions from the drawings I had made...

    Collet chuck and backplate

a rod of the appropriate diameter will do. I've added an handle to it the second or third time I've realized I had mistakenly put the 'key' into the collet. Marcello

Half sized holders work perfectly on my lathe, too, though they're made in alu. The tiniest two, for 4mm tools, can be seen on the bottom left of the tool shelf I made from a CD holder. Marcello

    BF20 Spindle nut wrench

Adjusting the preaload using the angle grinder wrench I had modified in haste when need arose, and then welded in haste when it lost one of its pins was never handy. Next time, I know there will soon be a next time, I will try the tubular one. The strip of metal with a paper tape handle...

Yet another Quick Change Tool Post

Making toolholders is part of the fun, for me, while replacing tools into the holder is not. To say nothing about setting to height. ;D Got 33, IIRC, and will make a few more next time I will put my hands on a 66x30x350 alu. bar. ::) Marcello

Two Engines in One or Elmer Gets a Makeover

Well done, Stan. Looking forward the fixing pictures. If You should add a coupla shots of the finished engine, maybe a video, I would not protest. :) Marcello

    Bernay build - MZT

Piston-rods The printer bar material was a little too tight into the packing nuts, decided to try to get some clearance by interposing a strip of paper between the reamer and the bore. It worked. Chain drilling a block of scrap to remove the bulk of metal before milling the rectangular...

    Collet chuck and backplate

I mounted the ER chuck setting the screws from the front. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=14407.msg148075#msg148075 Marcello

    Lathe Chuck Backstop

Thank You John, had to choose that way because my spindle has a MT3 taper, while the chuck bore is somewhere in the 20 / 25mm range. Either that or I had to dismount the chuck anytime I needed to use/adjust the backstop. Marcello

Two Engines in One or Elmer Gets a Makeover

Stan, now I've read the instructions, Elmer confirms that "Drill #23 through the backwall for later tapping the 3/16-40 MTP exhaust connection", on page 44 in the valve housing paragraph. Now, the visual check of air admission to the piston at TDC is trivial. I suppose the valve should open...
