    An idea for a tachometer

This page from Tony Jeffree's site should be of interest http://www.jeffree.co.uk/pages/speedmeasurement.html Use of old motors and meters are towards the bottom, but reading the whole page is recommended. Ray

    0.125 diameter fiberglass rods--

Water scale, commonly calcium carbonate but with other trace elements, usually occurs with some heat exchange, be it ever so slight. When a molecule of H2O evaporates it leaves behind a molecule of solids and if it can stick to something, it will. This is how stalactites and stalagmites form. I...

    Tool Needed at Work

When I was about 18 I struggled to find a way to remove the flywheel mag from a 125cc Royal Enfield. My dad had a peep and next day came home from work with a puller he'd made (at someone's expense) He'd even oil-black finished it. 7 or 8 years later I had an Enfield 500 twin which needed a...

    linkage for parallel motion needed

Daft suggestion #173 - rack and pinion Hope it's not too daft. 2 tooth belt pulleys, one twice the tooth count of the other, pinned together on a common shaft. The racks are pieces of matching belt cemented to the pushrod ends. Push the rod on the large pulley and the other rod moves half the...

    Living with a Cowells

This faceplate may just have something going for your Cowells http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330525913394?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648 It's threaded 12 x 1mm but maybe there's just enough meat to make it 14 x 1.5 - core (or tap) dia for your thread is 12.5 mm. In this regard...

    My Cowells Lathe

You must have twisted that arm quite severely, Jo. That's a nice grab. It looks just like this one www.lathes.co.uk/cowells/page3.html An extra idler stud is required on lathes not equipped with the perceived luxury of a tumbler reverse in order to produced LH threads, as in pre-ML7 Myfords...

    NSU Cam Drive

My heart leapt a little when I saw this post. I had almost negotiated the purchase of a 4 year old NSU Max in 1961 when my father died suddenly so I didn't proceed. Then in the late 1970s I found a Prinz car which the owner told me was free for the taking - but with no documents. I drove it to...

    The micrometer fairy cometh!

Marv, I'd hoped for some expansion to help the class here assembled. They're called mils (one 'l') which is short for milliradian. There are 2*pi radians in a full circle. (Calculators out lads) that should be 6.2831854 or thereabouts. Faced with the problem of finding a worm and wheel with...

    Question for our Australian cousins

Marv, "strine" (Australian) is a derivative of the English as spoken by inhabitants of an area south of an invisible line across southern England. Many of the first settlers in Oz were invited to do so following a qualifying process, or sentence, as we call it, for stealing a pint of milk or a...

    screw cutting

My Exe 2-1/2" lathe has a 12tpi leadscrew and a 18 tooth gear permanently on the spindle. Simple gearing for a given TPI requires a leadscrew gear 3/2 times the desired thread e.g. - required 16 tpi - 16x3/2 = 24t on leadscrew The standard gears "rise by threes" - 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and...

question about tool holder alignment and boring

Chris, just showing that headstock has earned you a huge number of discount points, especially from Taig owners on this side of the pond where such things are largely unknown. Ray

question about tool holder alignment and boring

Thank you. I had not seen these headstocks before so I Googled "taig large bore headstock". Seems they come from the pool cue world, Peter, and can pass about 1-3/8" and have indexing built in, along with a dedicated chuck.

    Small V8 Offically done.

question about tool holder alignment and boring

Just an aside here. Everything in the pic is Taig, but I don't recognise the headstock. Can you enlighten me anyone? Ray

    m8 left handed taps

Emco made the Unimat DB & SL machines with M8 LH leadscrews running in cast iron and ali. Most existing SLs have their original screws it seems, so Emco stuck with it. KRV said his nut was broken, not worn, so I suppose Emco had intended it to be replaceable. Shame about the price :) Ray

    m8 left handed taps

Will this work for you? http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=43645&highlight=acetal+nuts I've never tried it but may need to for the one piece nut on my Exe 2-1/2" lathe. Looks like it offers near zero backlash and you can make a couple of spares while you're at it. Like the man...
