Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

Nice Little Engine Arv ! It sounds pretty good to me. If you want to change the sharpness of the hits, try Chucks idea and put a little stronger spring on the exhaust valve. You can also try playing with the governor spring a little. What I found with mine, if I lighten the spring tension on...

Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

I would agree, 4 cycle and 2 cycle should sound the same with the governor. With a load on it the 2 cycle version should have more power available to run something, being it would hit every cycle. Scott

Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

I have been busy doing other stuff around the house lately, but finally had sometime to get back to this little engine. Here is the new look! It has a new base, frame and water jacket added. The water jacket was machined to use the existing cylinder I already had made. The cooling fins cut into...

Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

Marv, Nick pretty much hit it on the head. Here is a pdf file with some models of how the fork works with the cap screw cam. http://www.scottsrc.com/machining/forkdetail.pdf The first 2 pictures show the cam in the "hit" position with the linkage fork in place. The 3rd picture shows the cam...

    Dave's Chuck Sigle

Great looking engine Dave! I really like the way the countersunk cap screws look. I just posted a link to the governor drawings in the "photo's" section, part of the "Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss" thread. Hopefully you can make some sense of them! I just took mine apart to get machining...

Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

Ok, Here are drawings for the governor parts and a basic drawing of how they go together. Hopefully the drawings are up to par and no one has too many troubles reading them. http://www.scottsrc.com/machining/flyweightgovernor.pdf Here is a quick idea on how to make it work with a 4 cycle...

Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

Thanks for all the great replies, I am really happy with this little engine. I am working on some drawings for the governor portion of the engine now, which I can hopefully finish in the next few days. There are no real drawings for the rest of the engine, maybe I can get some cad/solidworks...

    Miniature fan belt

Steve, You might look in the hair care section of your local Walmart, they sell small black rubber bands for tying braided hair, my daughters buy them all the time. I used one of these little rubber bands as a "spring" for my little flyweight governor, they are pretty small, the one I am using...

Thanks for all the Welcomes! I dove right in and posted the current engine project I am working on, along with some videos. I can't agree with you more, this is the best place I have found on the internet, a great amount of knowledge and friendly bunch to boot! Scott

What does everyone do? (or did, if retired)

After High School I enlisted in the USN as an Avionics Technician and served 4 years working mainly on FA-18 and F-14 aircraft systems. After that I stuck with Aviation electronics and went to work for Hawkins & Powers Aviation (Fire Bombers). I got to work on a lot of older aircraft, it was...

Small Chuck's Single Hit & Miss

Here it is, my small Chuck's Horizontal Single with added flyweight governor. At first I didn't know if it would work but a few suggestions by Chuck and Gail got it running! Here is the video, see what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4KHmDs-iN4 The engine is still in the "rough"...

    Small Horizontal Single Governor

Here are a few pics of the engine with the new parts installed. <a href="http://www.scottsrc.com/machining/horizontal5.jpg"><img src="http://www.scottsrc.com/machining/thumbs/horizontal5.jpg"></a> <a href="http://www.scottsrc.com/machining/horizontal6.jpg"><img...

    Small Horizontal Single Governor

First off, thanks for all the great comments about this engine, and don't worry I haven't given up yet! Chuck: I never even thought about the exhaust valve, I was too worried about the intake. Increasing the spring tension on the exhaust valve should also increase the air pressure required to...

    Small Horizontal Single Governor

I finished assembling the governor last night and did some testing using a small rubber band to put tension on the weights. I think I kind of succeeded and failed at the same time :o Success: The governor does work and regulates the speed of the engine. I played with different adjustments and...

    Small Horizontal Single Governor

Alright here goes the experiment. As may of you have seen, I built a smaller version of Chuck's Horizontal engine, a 2 cycle version. There is some pics and video of it in the Photos section. Now I am attempting to make a flyweight governor for it, very similar to what is on a hit or miss...

    Smaller Version of Chuck's Single

I am taking the same route (basically) as a hit or miss engine. I am planning on the governor stopping the intake valve from opening, without it opening, the slave exhaust valve will stay open allowing the engine to free-wheel. I'll have to start another thread in the "Work in Progress" section...

    Smaller Version of Chuck's Single

Gail: I tried it first with just a plain aluminum cylinder, but it looked like it needed something. I put it back in the lathe and cut the fins, it looks alot better, kind of like there is more "going on"! I may change it in the future to look more like a hit or miss engine by adding a square...

    Smaller Version of Chuck's Single

I started this engine about 3 months ago and got side tracked until last week. I just finished it up (atleast the first part of the project) about a week ago. It is a smaller version of Chuck's Famous Single engine. This one is a 2 cycle version, as I didn't have any small gears to make it a 4...

Well, I have been a member for a little while, kind of hiding in the background, I figured it was time to make my first post on the forum. I have always been interested in anything mechanical since I was a kid. My first introduction to machining was when I was about 14, my Dad bought me a Taig...
