    polishing gray cast iron?

Is it possible?. Im working on a stuart V10 engine which has a cast iron flywheel. Most of engines I see have a highly polished rim. Is it possible to achieve this with grey cast iron or are the flywheels I'm looking at steel. If it is possible whats the basic process? cheers Mat

    SX3 Conversion

the .exe file is there. on the screenshot of the bottom part of the mach3 folder, there's a file called mach3 with a black circle as its icon. Thats the mach3.exe file. windows doesnt display the file extension ( the .exe bit in this case) for some file types. matt

    Power feed for X3 mill

Hi Bob i'm in process of doing same thing. eventually going to do all 3 axis to cnc the mill. Using fignoggle plans which call for a nema 34 1000oz motor. That seems like massive overkill so im using a nema 34 size 4-500oz motor. Matt

    SX3 Conversion

im going to stick with nema 34's. 400oz for x and y and probably 8-900 oz for z. doing x and y first so I'll try temporarily fitting one of 400oz motors to z when i build it and seeing how much more power it needs to give a reasonable speed. not a massive price difference between 23's and 34's...

X3 Mill - Axminster or Arceurotrade?

tbf except for a complete novice the arc preparation isnt really worth the money. provided you prepared to put in a bit of elbow grease cleaning off the shipping grease, then anyone with a basic set of skills can follow the very good arc preparation walkthrough (available as a pdf free of charge...

    X3 Supplier Question

Hi any idea of a timescale to the arc power feed? john stevenson mentioned something similar on one of forums six month or so back. Also do you have any idea if it will be possible to interface into the powerfeed at a later stage and control it with step/direction signals? Thinking is to add...

Whats a typical speed to run the cutter at? at widest diameter cutter is about 1" diameter. do I calculate cutter speed for tip diameter or for average diameter? I'm cutting en1a steel on an x3 mill. cutting internal keyways?

mines a mt3 spindle so doesnt take a lot of force to tighten drawbar. Made the part now. Ended up doing as gailinm suggested and milled the slots with the disc mounted on rotary table after I found the right size endmill in the back of a toolchest. I'll post a piccy later. Thanks for all the...

    cutting internal keyways?

Hi all I've got an X3 mill and it doesnt feature a spindle lock. Normal method is to make a pin spanner to engage on a couple of holes on the bottom of the spinde but this is a bit awkward to use. The top of the spindle consists of a 20mm shaft with six equidistant 4mm wide by 2.5mm square...

anyone know a good uk source for spur gears? I need a mod 1 48 tooth steel spur gear that i can bore out to 14mm. RS and farnell have both discontinued the size and hpc are out of stock. Anywhere else I can try without silly minimum orders or delivery charges? Cheers Matt

    Mini lathe

the digital readout on a mini-lathe is pretty pointless as it is tied into the handwheel and doesnt take account of backlash. Go for better package over DRO imo.

    Reaming holes

on a related topic how do you adjust an adjustable reamer? I'm assuming you just measure across widest point with verniers? Is this right or is there a better method. Matt
