    Marking Out/Layout Resources?

I'm getting back in the shop after a two month hiatus and would like to improve my accuracy. Are there any marking out/layout tutorials available on the web? I'm making do with a square and a ruler but would like to get a surface plate, height gage, etc. I've had no formal training so any info...

    Pinning a Crankshaft

I'm making a built up crankshaft for my Upshur engine. What are the options for the pin? Do you use a dowel pin? Can a pin and loctite work as opposed to a pin and soft solder? Does the drilled hole for the pin have to be reamed under size? Any other options? Thanks, Jenaro

Birth and Death of a crankshaft - a.k.a. "I had a huge Stupid Attack!!!!"

After a few days off in my shop I decided it was time to tackle the crankshaft for my Upshur Farm engine. I decided I would machine it out of 1018 steel as one piece as described in the plans. To scrap or not to scrap?

I'm building an Upshur farm engine. Due to my initial problems with drilling holes accurately in my drill press (separate thread) my front plate has a bored hole which ended up .028" off center to the left as measured between the inside of the bore and the side of the plate on both sides. As...

Accurately centering holes with drill press?

I just got a new drill press. Having problems accurately drilling marked holes. I tried center drilling first but then the table has to be lowered to fit the drill bit so all positioning is lost. Tried a few holes yesterday on some 1/4" aluminum but locating by eye on a marked location I still...

    My Cave

Just thought I'd post a few pictures of my cave (shop) as my S.O. refers to it. It's in the corner of my 2 car garage so it's not real big. I don't have any big machinery so I guess it's fine that way. This is a picture of my lathe. It's a Taig with a Leeson 1/4 hp DC motor with a variable...

    Side Milling

I'm having a tough time getting a decent finish when side milling. By this I mean when you take say a 3"x3"x.25" aluminum plate and set it in the vise flat. You then use your x axis to move the stock sideways against the side of the mill bit. I always end up with a ridged finish. If i set the...

    Dremel tool spindle thread size?

I made a milling column for my taig lathe which uses a dremel tool. I need to know what the thread size is for the spindle. I want to make a few accesories but would rather screw them onto the spindle than use the collet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jenaro
