    Hercus model OM Mill

New (old) milling machine! Sadly my Atlas had to move to a new home to make room, but I'm very pleased with the Hercus. It's quite a bit more substantial than the Atlas, so I can take much heavier cuts. Pity about the lack of power feed, but I rarely used that anyway. I'll need to re-tool, so...

    Mould and core washes

I'm wondering what people use as 'washes' to fill in the gaps in the sand of cores and moulds, in cases where a fine finish is needed, or to prevent sand 'burning on' to the surface of the casting. Any suggestions?

Boring head, in a smaller size

I've wanted a boring head for quite a while, but the regular ones are far too big for my mill. Here's my solution to that issue. The body is 37mm in diameter, and it takes 10mm tools. I made the attached tool from silver steel. The m6 lead screw with 50 divisions on the dial makes for 0.02mm...

I've since gone full Nerd and gone down a very deep rabbit hole reading about diesel combustion systems, in particular the work Sir Harry Ricardo (who should be a personal hero of any model engine builder) did on...

    Nerd's Webster build

So my first proper dip into model engines begins! The ubiquitous Webster engine. I'm sorry to say that I haven't yet finished any parts, so perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself in starting a build log, but things are fresh in my mind and I'm feeling enthusiastic so it's a good time to write. I...

    Hi

Hi everyone, I've been lurking around for a bit soaking up the wisdom in this forum, but now I'm starting to build engines too (I made a little steam engine to my grandfather's design, and just started a Webster) I thought it might be time to make an introduction: Pleased to meet you all :)
