    Kozo A3 in 1.5" scale

Britt, Kozo's book includes a section in the back on how to scale the locomotive up to 1.5". It guides you through the differences in the two scales. Some components are different than the 3/4" scale version, such as the frame, boiler, pistons, etc., while others are completely new, such as the...

    Kozo's Pennsylvania A3 Switcher in 1.5" Scale

Over the past few days I finished the cylinders. First came drilling and tapping the heads, using the DRO to locate my array of holes: Next came whittling down the cylindrical portion. Kozo suggests making a mandrel in the lathe, mounting the cylinder to it, and (with the lathe shut off)...

    Kozo's Pennsylvania A3 Switcher in 1.5" Scale

More progress on the cylinders... machining the steam ports took an excruciatingly long time with a 1/8" carbide endmill, but I managed to finish them without breaking it. Don't have any R8 collets, but the drill chuck worked just fine... The plans don't specify how deep these ports need to be...

    Kozo's Pennsylvania A3 Switcher in 1.5" Scale

Thanks Kvom! When I built the frame several years ago I drilled a blowdown hole in each side.

    Kozo's Pennsylvania A3 Switcher in 1.5" Scale

I like your profile pic Dad! Quick couple hours in the shop today, machined the steam port and frame mounting faces to their proper dimensions. Got the corners as close as I could without cutting into the heads...

    Kozo's Pennsylvania A3 Switcher in 1.5" Scale

Thanks Kvom, I'll keep an eye on the yoke mounting holes. When I met Jesse Banning he said the same thing about the steam dome... what exactly is the issue? Does it need to go forward or something?

    Kozo's Pennsylvania A3 Switcher in 1.5" Scale

Howdy folks, in this thread I'll be documenting my progress on my first live steam locomotive: Kozo Hiraoka's A3 switcher. I started in 2017 with no machining experience, and have worked on it sporadically since. I was quite inspired by Kvom's build of this locomotive, seen in this thread...

    Kozo A3 in 1.5" scale

Short session at the makerspace to turn the two bushings for the bracket I made yesterday. Don't have any bronze laying around at the moment, so I used some scraps from a chess set I made last year. The "black" pieces had bases made of melted bullet casings that I poured into a steel mold, then...

    Kozo A3 in 1.5" scale

This thread is now officially hijacked for my own purposes! I will be documenting progress on my A3 build, which is exactly like kvom's, except that I don't have CNC capabilities. Now anyone looking to build this locomotive in the future will have TWO projects for reference! If we hit an image...

    Kozo A3 in 1.5" scale

What's wrong with the axle pump? Would injectors be preferable?

    Kozo A3 in 1.5" scale

That's a shame. How much would you sell it for? You might have luck putting it on the Discover Live Steam website.

    Kozo A3 in 1.5" scale

Kvom, I know this thread is dead, but I'd like to sincerely thank you for documenting your A3 build! It was an great inspiration for me to begin my own A3 in 1.5" scale back in 2017. I read through the entire thread one day in high school after I bought Kozo's book, and watched years of your...
