Anzani Fan Type 1/4 scale model

The attached crankshaft_2.pdf file is updated with the missing dimensions and the as built depiction of the counterweight shape. See .jpg above. I didn't calculate the crank taper angle. I believe I used a sine bar on the lathe and cut the crank and prop hub tapers at the same setup to be...

I wonder if I am wasting my time trying to build the 3D model Creast: Doesn't that depend on your purpose for building the 3D model? I'm happy you have done this at all and I wonder what your purpose is? I'm certainly willing to support you with corrections if I can. Ken

Creast: If you would point out missing dimensions as you come across them I'll attempt to update the drawings or publish corrections. The attached image from the build shows all the crankshaft parts. There are no locknuts. Perhaps the locknuts you see are the collars used in the brazing...

    cylinder compression question

It looks to me as if the .605 article at MEN is missing the last (3rd) installment that would have been in issue 3586. Did you build other variations of the .605 single? Did it run well. I'm thinking of building a bar stock version and I wonder if you might offer me some advice on PM?

    Darracq 25HP 1/4 Scale Model

Thanaks Jos. I'm not brave enough to try to fly this. I will be satisfied if it runs. When I started this post I found your's about the Demoiselle. That is a great start on a very ambitious prokect. Ken Rector

    Darracq 25HP 1/4 Scale Model

Thanks Steve. I was inspired to try this by your and George Britnell's posts a long time ago, maybe near 2008 when I first joined the forum.

Darracq 25HP 1/4 Scale Model Drawings

Attached are a set of 8 pages of construction drawings for the two cylinder 25HP Darracq aero engine of 1909 described at: https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/darracq-25hp-1-4-scale-model.35515/ The drawings of the crankcase and cylinder and some valve parts have been used to...

    Darracq 25HP 1/4 Scale Model

Next step was the cylinders. These are a simple cylindrical shape with a mounting flange and a boss to mate with the copper waterjacket. The water jacket is to be soldered to the cylinder at the boss and I thought it might be good to have a matching copper ring at that joint. I experimented a...

    Darracq 25HP 1/4 Scale Model

After the boring operation and the interior cavities were finished with the dremel, needle and riffler files and emery cloth, work commenced on the external features. I wrote a simple C program to produce tables of offsets for milling the ball shape of the case half. The offsets were computed...

    Darracq 25HP 1/4 Scale Model

My research for the Anzani Fan Type engine model exposed a lot of prospects for other engine models that have not been built by anyone yet. Among these was the opposed two cylinder water cooled, 25HP Darracq engine of 1909. While not as popular as the Anzani, this small engine was used by...

Anzani Fan Type 1/4 scale model

The carburetor on the Anzani was made by the firm of Arquembourg and Grouvelle which was more known for radiators in 1909. However, many aero engines of the time used their carburetor. I found a US patent for the carburetor, 932860 patented Aug. 31, 1909. The carburetor is fitted with a...

Anzani Fan Type 1/4 scale model

The next parts are the intake tubes and the plenum. The intake tubes are bent in a couple of planes and with fairly small radius bends relative to the tube diameter. I did some research on the web and coincidently our club, the Southern California Home Shop Machinists (SCHSM) was invited to...

The next step was to make the timing gears. A friend had loaned me a complete set of Strictly I.C magazines and I read them thoroughly and scanned what I thought were the most important articles. One of these was an article by Pat Loop in the August/September 1994 issue that described a method...

Anzani Fan Type 1/4 scale model

The fork and blade rods are even now found in motorcycle engines just as in 1909. The rods big ends are all slightly different in shape and I marked them out and roughed them out to the lines on the mill. As usual I made a fixture to hold them. The little end was drilled and fit onto a dowel...

Anzani Fan Type 1/4 scale model

The crankcase parts are the front, back and timing gear cover. I made some drawings to determine where the cutter path would be for the external shape of the case halves and again I wrote a simple program to determine the step offsets for the milling operation. Since this is a round part I...
