Let's discuss market of internal combustion engines

I Have a 40V battery 2in chainsaw. Adequate for the garden. Dropped a 30 ft walnut tree and cut the trunk through at about 14 inches (cutting from either side as per regular tree felling). Also chopped the trunk into 6 x 2 ft lengths. For the branch trimming I had previously used a brash saw -...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I don't have the drawings... but this looks to me like a half-moon machined into the post, for a shaft to fit into, that had a hole drilled through for the mounting bolt to retain. The rockers then hand on either end of the shaft. I occurred to me that the pillar will see a load on one side...

Hello, from the Pacific Northwest !

Hi J: WELCOME! You are joining an interesting and diverse group with many differing ideas of "What is right" . But you are old enough to filter that into "what is right for you". As "Machining" is the significant part of the title of this group, much of the stuff is about fixing the problems...

Boiler for putting around in small dinghy.

Just a couple of things: The blower:"The blower nozzle is about a third of the way up the pipe, 1/4od tube with the end flattened into a slot." Please try it mounted at the bottom of the stack, or 1~3in below if there is space? The "cone" of steam that pushes the air up the stack will take...

"it did stay straight and runs smooth and true." I call that a good job! Well done! K2

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Thanks for the CAD demonstration Jason. Really comprehensive. It's the sort of thing I used at work, but cut sections where I wanted them and moved parts to geometrically define the actual depth of foul, etc. rather than just pretty motion pictures. But I'm sure you do that as well, so you get...

Boiler for putting around in small dinghy.

The flue and blower combination needs a look. I can't see how tall it is. IF the blower nozzle is placed about 2~3 inches below the 3"dia chimney tube and the tube is more than 2 ft long, I can see it should produce some draught. But it needs "enough draught" so the wood fire - even with...

What have you been doing today?

The pun comes from comes from very old clever people. My Grandfather loved "word-play" and had many books from his Victorian school days on word-play. A part of the teaching that was so entertaining back in his time. She may enjoy "Schoolboy Howlers" - if you can find a copy? Or a more modern...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Hi Brian, I apologise for starting that bit of the thread. (post #63). Opened my mouth and put my big foot in it (Again!). I was not criticising your ability, just the original designs should have done the job. I was simply saying it is a "common problem" that in the heat of designing...

Well done! All in a day's "hobby". K2

What have you been doing today?

"WELL" done! (Someone had to say that!). - but really well done in doing the DIY. Not calling the "experts"... ("Ex" is a has been, a "Spurt" is a drip under pressure...). Or "Exp" =expensive, "Urt" is how it feels when you have to pay them. K2

Use a small diesel engine injector and an electric (pressure) fuel pump? Used with diesel mat give you suitable atomisation and combustion. Especially sprayed against a fire-brick dam/wall? - or up at the bottom of the boiler tank? Turbulence from the air-fuel mixture hitting a wall improves...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Looking good! Is the potential rod to cylinder foul due to the rods being off-set for the centre line of the cylinders? I am surprised you have had this foul. Easy to spot when checking on the drawing board, when working on the general arrangement. And the angle where the rod is at max "throw"...

    Monotube Flash Boiler Design

Thanks Toymaker. I was envisioning the sphere as similar to a pair of cones - just non-linear - joined at their common large diameter. Air injected tangentially at the equator splits so half goes up and half down... both have reducing diameter vortices, depositing oil droplets on the inside...

No. But I have run a compound twin on Steam. MUCH better then air. Procedure, Turn ON steam supply slightly, and turn engine over so it gurgles and pumps condensate out... There is a lot of metal to heat before this will run so a lot of condensate ,,,,, I start when the boiler is below running...

Boiler for putting around in small dinghy.

Excellent news! I think you have a bit of snagging to do, but the blower sounds good. But I would position the blower nozzle aligned to blow straight up the middle of the chimney, for the bottom of thechimney, or even as much as 3 inches below. (If there is space to the t of the boiler). Now...

Thanks. I wasn't involved in the centrifuge design as such. Just installation of power supplies to centrifuges. Can say no more.... signed Official Secrets paperwork. So I know NOTHING about the system. Cheers! (Before they lock me away). K2

Hi Andrew, I can imagine your process. Sounds good! Aligning the throw pieces to get the centres truly in line may be "a bit of fun" - but that is what it is all about! :) K2

Yesterday I was "expelled" from my local Model Club by a committee member who "made a joke" - which I interpreted as unfair criticism - so reacted badly! - Then turned my back and exited when he angrily "gave me a dressing down...!" - Upsetting. It is a HOBBY. The club is a place to which I go...
