    Help dismantling gearbox

There appears to be some corrosion within the gear train so try soaking the shafts/bearings/gears with release oil overnight.

What kind of diesel engine will be next ?

Hi Minh Your drawing shows a marine trunk piston engine with blast injection. Blast injection is achieved by supplying the injectors with a low pressure fuel supply via a simple circulating pump and the fuel is injected by admission of compressed air. The injector actuation and air admission is...

    Diesel engine : Kromhout Gardner 4LW 1940

If you look carefully at the full size Gardner engine you will find a 'cold start' button at the free end of the fuel pump which allows extra rack travel on start up. Even the original engines needed some encouragement to start!! Despite that, an experienced operator could start an engine with...

    Diesel engine : Kromhout Gardner 4LW 1940

Hi Minh A couple of minor observations which may (or may not!) be relevant :- There appears to be quite a difference in the lengths of the injector pipes which might create false timing and I cannot see if you have spill pipes from the injectors to release excess fuel after injection? It's still...

What kind of diesel engine will be next ?

Hi Minh, how about the big brother of the 4LW you are currently building - the Gardner 8L3B complete with Gardner reverse/reduction gearbox? I am in awe of your skill in modelling the 4LW Graham

    USS Monitor Steam Engine Drawings

Such a fascinating engine, all credit to the original designer but most of all to your engineering skills sir. Looking at the kinematics of the drive chain is there ever a "dead spot" beyond which the engine will refuse to stroke on start-up? Yours in awe, Graham

    Commer T3S

Further to my earlier post the TS stood for Tilling Stevens who were also part of the Rootes Group and manufactured the engines in Maidstone. There is no connection between Rootes Group and Roots turbochargers apart from the drive shaft!

    Commer T3S

This engine was extensively sold into the marine market as a Rootes Lister TS3. Rootes Group were the parent company of Commer and Lister Blackstone marketed these alongside their (more conventional) 4 strokes. I used to manage three vessels each having two of these as alternator (generator)...

    Inexpensive (cheap) Surface Plate

It is common practice at sea to use a port hole glass for lapping the faces of injector nozzles. All ships carry a selection of these glasses and the Engineers just have to sweet talk the Bosun to acquire one!

Looking for input on a cylinder block corrosion issue.

This effect is occasionally found in full size diesels and is a result of excess coolant velocity. Over time it produces an appearance similar to woodworm attack or osmosis on a fibreglass yacht hull and the holes will 'bore' through the full thickness of the liner wall. Caveat emptor cavitation!

    Lapping cylinders - compounds

As an alternative to, or in association with some of the above it is worth considering the use of 'running-in' or 'breaking-in' oils. Graham

I Have a Lot to Work on.

This reminds me of the story of the African king who had a hobby of collecting ceremonial thrones which he stored in the roof of his hut. Eventually the weight of his collection caused the roof to collapse and the demise of the king - the moral is, people who live in grass houses shouldn't stow...

anybody know anything about this lathe?

I guess the leadscrew is actually 1" dia x 8tpi which, once you sort out the gear ratios, will make the thread cutting calcs straightforward. Plan for the worst but hope for the best!

    Lathes are everywhere

Needs to be brought back to life as per Latherus

    Broken crankshaft !?

Does the engine have a thrust bearing to mitigate end float? G

    Need help with this drawing

Do the dimensions of the adjacent component(s) give any clues? I was always taught never to lift dimensions from printed drawings. Graham

What kind of machine is this?

It's certainly not a steam engine. The push rods and valve gear indicate a 4 stroke IC engine and it looks as though there is an injector situated on the cylinder head so could be gas or diesel powered. Also there's a vacant flange at the flywheel end of the cam housing which probably...

    Buying small spur gears off-the-shelf.

The site edited my message which gave the email address, you'll find Gears and Sprockets in the UK but I guess the hyperlink in the original reply will work. Graham
