    Adverts on the site

I have found the adverts on this site getting more and more intrusive. It's doubtful that the owner of the site will get rid of something that earns money, and I can't live with them. From now on I won't use the site. Lee

Lost foam casting question, sort of.

I have seen other craft sites where a two part expanding foam liquid is mixed and then poured. The foam expand quickly and fills the mould it was poured into. would this foam be suitable for producing a foam pattern for lost foam metal casting? I have a feeling it's the wrong sort of foam and is...

    Facebook. Good? or bad? Useful?

I have not wanted to join Facebook because of all the negatives I have read about. What I don't get to hear are the positives. I have a lot of musical instruments to sell, as well as music scores. Facebook seems to be the ideal marketplace. Thoughts and experiences please. Lee

Solid Edge 2021 community edition install file

I would like to install SE community edition 2021 on a second computer, but I have lost (deleted!) the installation file. SE has moved on to edition 2024, it's not very friendly. Any ideas? I have searched the net and Siemans website, but no luck. Lee

    A bit of good luck

The photo shows one of my compost bins in front of my gazebo. It had been blown there by the recent high winds from 40 feet away. It missed the flower pots cemented to the weak capping stones by a very small margin.

My one tenth scale model of my 1930 Austin Seven.

I thought I had posted pictures of my car here before, I can't find any such post, so I will post these new pictures. I am making four, one tenth scale models of my vintage car. One for me and one for each of my sisters. I started many months ago and didn't tell them what I was doing. The cars...

    A view, 2/5/2023

Taken from my window at just gone 7am this morning. Very strong sunlight, but I think the mist shows OK. Illogan, Cornwall, UK.

Distortion in a resin 3D print

The picture shows two resin 3D printed interior panels for my one tenth scale model of my Austin 7. I am making four models, so I printed four pairs, four right and four left panels. They all came out of the printer with the distortion shown on the end of the left hand panel. The right hand...

Convert Design Spark Mechanical files to SAT files. Plus import STEP files into DSM.

I have found a way to convert RSDOC files into SAT files that can be imported into Solid Edge and other programmes that support SAT. I would suggest that if you’re going to try this do it with files that are copies. It isn't as difficult as it looks. 1) Create a new folder from C:\ I called...

    Oboe feather stand

I designed an oboe feather stand using Designspark mechanical. Text isn't a strong point of DS and I felt I might do better using SolidEdge. I am not well versed in SE so I watched several videos concerning text and extruding to a surface, and then trimming the protrusion. It wasn't easy! The...

3D print two flywheel patterns, PLA and resin.

I decided that instead of reprinting my conrod pattern I would repair the pattern and print something else. That something else is the flywheel for the engine I am working on, it has two. I sliced the STL file in Cura5 for the Ender3, duplicated the pattern half to give me the two sides, and set...

    3D print a conrod pattern

I am nearly ready to try a casting using patterns made with my resin 3D printer. I printed the conrod pattern with my resin printer and the baseplate with my Ender3. The baseplate will need the layer lines filled in, but that's a simple task. The plate has two raised bosses that the conrod sits...

90-odd pecent success. How accurate is a resin 3D print?

I looked very carefully at my printer settings and changed them. My last few prints were using the default settings. When the build plate is lowered into the resin vat and then raised, it can cause a lot of suction. I slowed the raising of the plate between layers to reduce the effect of the...

    It nearly worked

I finally found the time to get my new resin printer set up. I discovered that the FEP film on the resin vat had some ripples in it. This is not a good thing in a film that is supposed to be under tension. But I decided to try a print anyway. I had three files ready to print and loaded the first...

Are there any X shaped engines?

When I see the list of engines being built in these and other forums, V12, W18 4s, 6s radials etc. I wonder if anyone ever built an X shaped cylinder layout engine. Balance wise it seems to make sense, but maybe I am very wrong and it makes no sense!

    Nearly there....

My 3D resin printer has sat idle for a while now because of two things. One, I am not going to waste expensive resin printing something I can't use (in casting). Two, the "slicer" programme, Photon Workshop, that came with the printer wouldn't work on either of my computers. My "internet"...

Anycubic Photon M3 resin printer. How good/bad is it?

I have shortlisted my choice of afordable resin 3D printers to this one, the Photon M3. The build volume is good, and the resolution is bound to be a lot better than my Ender3. I am also hoping that the print time will be shorter than the same file printed on the Ender. Have any of you got one...

    Sorry

I have a confession to make. I have started to dismantle my Austin Seven engine so that I can start designing the half size model. (Is it half size or half scale?) Today I wanted to remove the flywheel which is held onto the crankshaft by a taper and large nut. The nut was easy to remove and I...
