    Adverts on the site

I have found the adverts on this site getting more and more intrusive. It's doubtful that the owner of the site will get rid of something that earns money, and I can't live with them. From now on I won't use the site. Lee

Lost foam casting question, sort of.

I have sent a request to East Coast Fibreglass Supplies asking for advice. In the meantime I am trying to get my head around designing the patterns/moulds required to produce a foam part. Whem making a flywheel pattern for example, I print the two halves of the pattern, then sand and fill for a...

Lost foam casting question, sort of.

Very useful information Mr. Troll. Did you carve the styrofoam to shape? It's a pity styrofoam can't be poured like PU. Lee

Lost foam casting question, sort of.

I watched a video about pouring PU foam into a single sided mould. They did two pours, one "open" with nothing to stop the excess foam spilling out, and one "closed", a sheet of plastic with a few holes in was placed on top of the mould to let the excess foam escape, but keep the foam under a...

Lost foam casting question, sort of.

I was thinking of something like PU foam, and now I've read a bit about it, I don't think it will burn out without producing toxic gasses.

Lost foam casting question, sort of.

I have seen other craft sites where a two part expanding foam liquid is mixed and then poured. The foam expand quickly and fills the mould it was poured into. would this foam be suitable for producing a foam pattern for lost foam metal casting? I have a feeling it's the wrong sort of foam and is...

    Facebook. Good? or bad? Useful?

I have not wanted to join Facebook because of all the negatives I have read about. What I don't get to hear are the positives. I have a lot of musical instruments to sell, as well as music scores. Facebook seems to be the ideal marketplace. Thoughts and experiences please. Lee

    New Member Miguel Piera

Hi Miguel, Welcome. Your English is as good as mine, and I am English. Well, half English and half Welsh. It would be interesting to know what software you are using. There are many discussions on here about the software to use for 3D models. Lee

Expand the "Home Foundry and Castings Section" ?

It seems I have posted my comment out of place. Could some kind soul point me to the thread where we are discussing sub headings?

Expand the "Home Foundry and Castings Section" ?

I have just had a look at some of the main catagories on the front page. None of them had any sub headings. Am I missing something? I would like to see sub headings for the casting section, and wonder if others feel the same about the catagory they visit.

    Hand cramping and arthritis

I am 70 and have had arthritis since age 21-ish. The only thing that helped ease the pain, and got me walking, was pure lavender oil. Dilute a few drops into a carrier oil, bath oil is ok, way oil?, probably not, and rub it on the affected joints. I also ran a very hot bath with just 4 or 5...

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

I would like to know more about the construction and materials used for your core moulds hardened in the microwave. Have you made a video?

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

100model. I am fairly certain that by the time I had the failures I was using 5% ss with fine dry sand, hardened with a 5 second burst of CO2. The cores were about the size of half a golf ball, if that. It was also after the failures that I ran out of CO2. This is why I believe that there was...

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

Thanks olyn, but my resin prints are very prone to warping and distortion. I wouldn't use them for something as important as a mould. It might be the resin (water washable) or it could be me. Maybe I cure them for too long (5 mins for a print half the size of a computer mouse) or for not long...

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

I was having a lot of problems the last time I tried casting a part. There seemed to be an air pocket of some sort bursting the mould. I couldn't figure it out and haven't cast anything since then. I was sure it was the sodium silicate/sand core. My CO2 gas ran out soon after the failures, and I...

    Water wash resins

Good suggestion. Next time I print something I will leave it attached to the build plate for a day.
