how to figure the off set to drill this hole at an angle

Hi Werowance, I know the old patent sketches you mention, I came across them too. Sorry, I don’t have a decent drawing, it was more or less ‘make it up as I go along’! I would have like to achieve more of trumpet effect, but think the original sirens were ‘spun’ and not turned out of solid...

how to figure the off set to drill this hole at an angle

Hi, good luck with your project, will be interested to see the result. Here is one I made earlier. I also had issues drilling the holes, more by trial and error! Regards Paul

    Radial Engine Plans

Nine finger mentions the Karl-Eric Olsryd engine. I’m in the process of building this, having bought an incomplete set of castings some time ago. New castings are unfortunately not available, which would be an added challenge if trying to make from plans. Making the planetary housing from bar...

    Measuring length on a lathe

As HMEL suggested, a sleeve will work well in this case. I would call it a ‘top hat’ type, where the rim of the hat is pushed up against the chuck jaws. The top hat should be a blind hole so as to act as a depth stop to your part. Make the tube wall thickness thin enough, and saw slits (2 or...

Hello Peter, I was not an apprentice but the attached vice is one I made from CES castings and drawings some years ago, although I think I bought them off eBay, I can’t recall. The base of the vice looks bit different from yours, and the slide ways are square. Is this of use? regards Paul

Radial engine cam wheel drive gear issue

Hi Rich, I don’t know the provenance of these cam gears, if they were made commercially or not. What is apparent when studying the earlier pics, and has been confirmed by others, is that they don‘t have the normal ‘flats’ to the tooth sides and top, but rather are smooth radii. They are...

Radial engine cam wheel drive gear issue

Thanks Rich, all are Module 1 teeth. z80 rim gear mates to z20. z20 on the crankshaft mates to z40 the brass body holding the shaft with the 40/20 spur gears is eccentric, so there should be a bit of wriggle room, but need to get in the zone first. i think the Van Keuren measurements might...

Radial engine cam wheel drive gear issue

Thanks Rich, that’s interesting to know. I hate to trash what looks like good work on these gears, but I haven’t made gears before, and am not set up yet to do so, otherwise I might have had a go at new pinions. it looks to me like the problem is mainly with the 80t rim gear and mating 20t...

Radial engine cam wheel drive gear issue

Thanks for your replies. I swap e mails with Ken in Japan, who is always very helpful. All of his gears show the normal involute profile. The supercharger gears were not part of my kit, so I sourced the gears locally in the UK, and they have involute profiles. I have finished those and...

Radial engine cam wheel drive gear issue

Hi, I am continuing with my Whirlwind J5, 9 cylinder radial build, and have finally reached the point where I am assembling parts! With the kit, which was second hand to me but had not really been started, came some gears, some of which had machining done, for example lightening holes. The cam...

    Oil sight glass

Thanks xpylonracer, I had considered this and maybe simplest is best. I hope there wont be significant oil loss, so to check the level periodically would be easy enough. Thanks for bringing it back to reality! Paul

    Oil sight glass

Thank you Ken for your reply. I will take a look at the vertical tube system, that might be more visible than a tiny circular one. Regards, Paul

    Oil sight glass

Hi, I am building a model 125cc 9 cylinder Wright Whirlwind J5 radial. I need to source or make a sight glass to check oil level in the planetary gearbox. The wall thickness is 4mm Aluminium, with no space on the internal side for a nut. The hole diameter should ideally be about 8mm. I...
