    Question...

I have seen the suggestion that the connecting rod is 2.25 - 2.5 x the stroke (2W on your drawing) for a slow speed crosshead engine. L is determined by 2W + the needed clearances as mentioned previously so no need to include in any relationship between conrod and stroke.

How different in size can my flywheel be?

A bit larger is good and will not cause any issue, in fact it will tend to improve the slow speed running of the engine. Points to consider are the aesthetics, does it look in keeping with the rest of the engine and also are you able to machine the rim and bore the hub in one setting to...

a scratch built wobbler steam engine

Hi I am not an expert but I understand your query. I am also starting a scratch build wobbler and when I look at a few published designed I see the ports are in line at TDC and BDC so will make mine similar. I am pretty sure the engine will run with quite a wide tolerance away from the centres...

    Monitor and Potty mill engines

Hi All Having just made an introduction I thought I would show the Potty Mill and Monitor engines I have built. Both were made pretty much according to the published drawings though on the Monitor I made some detail changes to reduce the reciprocating weight and have a single air feed through...

Thanks Jack. I have based my engine on the OHC version which I thought was the simplest after looking through the single cylinder engines on the net. I have the frame, cylinder and and crank completed so far, and am about to bore the frame for the main bearings after deciding on a compression...

Hi All Just signed up after being a visitor for a long while. Over the last few years I have built a Potty Mill engine and a Monitor and now have my first IC engine under way based on one of B Rupnow's engines. My workshop is in the garage and I have an elderly Myford that has had a hard former...
