Finally got "Beam with a twist" running and displayed at my local model engineering open day. I am really pleased with final result and the more I run it the better it runs. I found that I had to open up a lot of joints etc to get it to run on the very low air pressure that I had at the show...
Just a quick comment, I have exactly the same rev counter and found it so unreliable retired it to the "will be useful sometime box". Now use one I built and calibrated with an industrial one. JC
Hello Tony, I have finally got around to building one after a major illness. I am polishing the parts up at the moment but will let you know when/if I get it running. I have altered drawings to Metric as all of my tooling and small brain are metric. JC
I use a car tyre inflator (12v) to run my little wobbler when we are at rallies. At a stall at a model engineering exhibition one trade stand were using a handpump to power a little beam engine. The sort that you get to pump up air mattresses etc.
What a lot of us in the auto trade didn't know at the time was that isocyanates can be absorbed through the skin.. Either stay away from them or be very VERY careful. I know of 2 friends in the trade who had serious problems in later life due to using these paints???? John
BaronJ I really agree with that statement.
OK I am a "newbie" but have given a dimension (spindle nose thread) in a post and find person has completely disregarded it and is still asking for information/dimension???? You just cannot help some people,, usually HWMBO.....
I have turned an aluminium face-plate for my little lathe and had real trouble with it binding onto the spindle. Have now turned one out of mild steel that I found in friends bit box no problem now. I used ally originally as I had a noggin of round bar left over the right diameter.
Thank you very much for the pics. and for the notes on what each exhibit is. That is a great help to newbies like me. Just got to keep practicing??? John
I like this forum, there are a lot of us with disabilities of one sort or another but getting out into "the shed" can make the difference between becoming a vegetable or doing something useful. USEFUL is a vague word with various meanings but to anyone that can get out into "the shed" and make...
As a thought to your endoscope, checkout auto supply places. I have a 8mm diameter camera used for looking inside auto engines and often wonder how I managed without it. Very reasonably priced and gets into all sorts of nooks and crannies. Wiring behind plasterboard, car dash panels etc.;)
I had a look at that motor this morning and from the plans I would guess that getting the ball to seat correctly and adjusting the pin length from top of piston to lift the ball the correct amount could be a problem. I remember reading somewhere about when seating a ball into that sort of seat...
I like your engine, it runs isn't that a great moment. Several of the drawings in that book need a closer look. I am working on my skill level as well but until that improves using what I can find in "The It Will Be Useful One-day" box. Many thanks for sharing your engine..
I have been showing at a local Steam Rally today (and tomorrow) at the side of a big reservoir. This year there are several small steam powered boats/launches? I spent a while talking to one owner and peering at his engine, a single cylinder oscillating engine with reversing valve that is very...
This pdf file shows (hopefully) how I made a simple and cheap Single Axis DRO for my antique lathe. It is like me and suffers from backlash in most joints:rolleyes: DRO uses a cheap digital vernier gauge , an Arduino and a 16x2 LCD display.
