    Which O-Ring for piston ring?

There are so many out there, I have no clue which to use for a piston ring. The one I got at the hardware store lasted about 10 minutes of run time. McMaster-Carr has a huge selection of types? https://www.mcmaster.com/o-rings

I don't know if folks are interested, but you don't see this stuff very often. Everything from traction engines to Maytag motors, hit and miss, a Corlis, steam engines, etc. Big collection of deceased collector and all online...

My chart for cutting gears doesn't go high enough. HELP

I have an indexing rotory table, but, I need to cut 150 teeth and the chart for the plates included only goes up to 50. Math is my weakest asset and I need serious help here. I need to understand the route to the answer also. So my multifold question is, which plate/tooth selection gets me...

Propane ribbon burner hot enough to melt pig iron?

Been learning about the burners and they seem very efficient. But I cannot find temperatures produced and only one person who melted steel....and his crucible. Anyhow, my forge is fired with a Harbor Freight weed burner and I can cast bronze and brass. Tried to melt some scraps of cast iron I...

Anyone built the Harris Steam Donkey?

As the title states. I have two items in his book I do not understand and it will take someone who has completed the donkey to get them answered. Currently working on one, winches are done, working on the steam side of things. 1. How does the steam cylinder rod connect to the slide. The rod...

Discuss using steel over cast iron

Being a scratch builder, I like bare bones. My current forge, which is more convenient than any other I have made is propane fired, thus will not get hot enough, long enough, to melt cast iron or steel. No problem with bronze, brass, or aluminum. Many of the steam engines I mess with declare...

    Help understand plan section

The photo shows a section of a shaft in plans for a steam donkey. This shaft is called a drum shaft. Regardless, the plan is confusing the heck out of me. This is .5" shaft, drill rod. It appears to me that the #19 drill is to a depth of 7/8. ????? Then, the slot, it wider and deeper than...

    Mery 6-stroke kit.

Hey all, Saw one of these at the Great American Steam Up in Brooks Oregon last summer and fell in love with it. Apparently it is one of the more rare, but highly spoken of. Purple (powder coat???) Apparently the builder got lucky and some high falutin' pinstriper did the pinstriping on it. It...

    Lost PLA processes, products, knowledge.

I need much more knowledge about this before I start purchasing the 'lost' products and what I need to purchase. Research on this site reveals some content, not enough. and hopefully this can be beneficial to others as the thread progresses. My only attempt was last year and I used plaster...

    Fowler Road Loco exploded view(s)

I bought a "complete set" of plans from Plastow/Brideport Foundry for the 2" Fowler Road Loco and there is no exploded view and they want another 40 pounds for a book that gives that information. I have 16 pages of plans for named parts and no exploded view. I find this most disconcerting...

How to compute size boiler needed?

How does one go about sizing a boiler to the steam plant? For example just to run a Twin Victoria.....1" bore, 1" stroke.... (two cyls). Add in a duplex pump that is two cyls, 5/8 bore x 1/2 stroke? Got a feeling I am opening a can of worms I may not want to deal with.
