Why does saliva produce a better looking finish than oil when machining steel?

Well in my Navy days, we used to 'Spit & Polish' our dress boots for inspections and parades. The wierd thing is, the spit produced a mirror finish far superior to 'tap' water? ??? Cheers, Chazz

Canada, a land of terrorists? Probably according to McMaster-Carr.

Living in Yellowknife, I make it a point of doing business with companies that have no issue with USPS flat rate boxes, as well, I've ordered stuff directly from the Far East that have "Spend $200.00 and we pay the shipping" and I've yet to be dissapointed. The trick is, do your research...

Steam Vs. Air and other things

Well it seems youv'e been 'around the block' when it comes to machining as it were, you just need a push out of the nest. ;) As to steam vs air, may I offer a few observations that are just my humble thoughts; First, I didn't see you mention any comfort level, skill sets, regarding soldering...

    G0704 Drill/Mill with Stand ?

A couple of observations, I have the Busy Bee Tool's 'Craftex' brand of the same mill. First, getting it down stairs should be quite easy. Since it is new, you will want to strip it down for a thorough cleaning anyway, so, remove the head and table from the base and clean\move, move\clean...

    Craftex mini milling machine

I have a CT129N, go for the CX600! When I got the CT129N, it was the only & biggest 'bench-top' column style mill\drill available, 3/4HP motor, MT3 Spindle. The CX600 has 1HP motor & R8 Spindle. Also, don't bother with the 'stock' stand, although sturdy, it's too short and 'nil' for storage. I...

    Retracting Toolholder

I built the Hemmingway kit with 2 mods, a rear dovetail to directly mount the tool to the QCTP rather than use up a tool holder and a more rigid setup. Second mod, I milled out a 1/2" pocket and cut a 1/2" TNMG tool holder in half to fit the pocket rather than using the 'round' tool. Cheers, Chazz

Using automotive crankshafts as a source of cast iron

Are you sure the crank shaft is 'Cast Iron'? ??? Most cranks are Built-up, billet or cast steel (I think?) Having said that, engine blocks and their components are an excellent source of material. Cheers, Chazz
