    Struggle with 1/8” dies

If the book is uk based then the 1/8" tap is most likely 1/8" x 26tpi BSF, that's british standard fine but there's nothing to stop you using sizes of drill rod and taps & dies local to your area, just check the knock-on effect on other components. I will often convert US fixings specified to...

    Werowance attempts Myfordboys traction engine

Umm just to knock this on its head, Myfordboy is not a jerk, just protective of his income. I've dealt with him on many occasions and he is a pleasant guy who will help if he can.

    Marks Holt 75

Won't be a problem opening up the new one, they normally have a small cover similar size to the drive just so that you can add a second drive, doesn't void the warranty.

    Marks Holt 75

Just take the drive out and put it in the spare slot in your new laptop and you'll be able to access all your files. Roger

    Steam Engine kit or plans

Hmmm, looks like to be safe I need to plan for either the Borderer x 2 or Paddleducks engine x 2 to be sure of adequate power then! decisions decisions. Do like your new one 👍😀

    Steam Engine kit or plans

So what size bore and stroke did you build yours to? I had a look at the Reeves Borderer and that would fit my space but I just don't know how powerful these engines are! This is where my knowledge of marine engines is not at all good and I have to rely on our 'experts' ;) :). If I took the...

    Steam Engine kit or plans

Yes Jon, I have these plans and the build thread. I tried to bring the plans into Fusion but came up with invalid format. I would need to increase the bore and stroke to 19mm (3/4") to get the required power of the original design and I don't know the impact of this increase on the Paddleduck...

    Steam Engine kit or plans

Definitely not Jon they're way too high and if I'm going to make the engine/s then I'll make them from plans, what I'm not good at is design, I really need a proven design that can be used/adapted that will give me what I want. At 69 I'm probably not going to have time on my side to build, test...

    Steam Engine kit or plans

Turbines would be a great idea but totally impractical, at model size they are not powerful enough and if I was to go down the leccy route then I might as well use brushless motors and a smoke generator ( it is my backup choice) but that would not be to the original design of the model albeit...

Sorry way too small and weedy for a 177cm destroyer ;)

    Steam Engine kit or plans

Yes Dave I know these sites well but most of the suitable engines are too high to fit. While I can follow and build to plans I'm afraid that I don't have the skills, or age on my side, to learn them in order to be confident of ending up with the engine I need for this build. Hence my original...

    Steam Engine kit or plans

Hmm nice, when I win the lottery I'll take 2, until then I'll keep looking for the plans, they must exist somewhere! Strangely I view the boiler as being much more straight forward, just need to know how much steam I'll be using.

    Steam Engine kit or plans

I have a 1:60 scale brass destroyer hull 72" length x 8" beam x 4" depth plus about 1" available height in the superstructure probably made in the late 1940's/early 1950's, displacement will be about 45lbs. I'm looking for plans/kit for a suitable engine/s that will fit and have the power to...

What is the best paint for an old machine restoration.

Try Tractol Paints, I used these when restoring a 1938 Denham Junior lathe. First an acid primer coat then undercoat and topcoat, all brushed on, doesn't chip and looks good.
