    Still use your minilathe?

Chuck - An HF 7x10 on sale is what got me off the 'thinking about it' boat and started building things. I got a faceplate for mine - think its 5" (from LMS) - and that chip shield and the one on the back of the lathe both had to go. I altered the motor controller wiring just a bit to...

    Squaring off with Lathe

Thanks for the suggestions - figured that was the way to do it but thought I'd see what you all had to say. Just trying to "level up" my machining skills with this project and it's all bar stock and I have plenty (knock on wood) extra, so if I mess it up I can keep re-doing until I get it right...

    Squaring off with Lathe

Getting started on a bar stock hot air engine. The kit has a piece of round bar stock that needs to be, among other things, turned in to a 40mm square block. I have a mini-mill and I realize that would be the easiest way to turn round bar into square bar, but what about using the 4-jaw chuck...

    Machining neodymium magnets

Few things - 1) I have bought quite a lot of these from kjmagnetics.com - they can make them in custom shapes for you - don't know what the minimums might be 2) little known fact - in many scenarios, the magnets actually have MORE strength if they are sandwiched between steel plates, or even...

    Lock Jaw on 10x22

I finally managed to get it off. Tapping it, heating it - none of it worked for me. Grizzly support offered a suggestion which worked. In case someone else runs into this, I'll note the solution. First, I turned down the end of a 5/8" scrap steel rod so it fit the spindle lock whole - probably...

    US State Boiler Code

Just ran across this web site with links to state boiler codes: http://www.stateboilerlaws.com/

    US State Boiler Code

Indiana - http://www.state.in.us/legislative/iac/title680.html Essentially adopts ASME. You can buy a complete copy of the AMSE Boiler & Pressure Vessel code online for just under US $14,000. .... (so, you are expected to abide by a set of rules that will cost you a fortune to obtain?) If...

    Lock Jaw on 10x22

I got a new grizzly 10x22 about a week and a half ago. Overall, seems like a lot of lathe for the money and I'm pretty happy with it. It came with a 3-jaw chuck on it, has a 4-jaw & faceplate in the box. Last night I thought I'd try out the 4-jaw; but I can't get the 3-jaw off. Per the owner's...

    Still use your minilathe?

Good points all ... last night I set the 10x22 gears up to cut a 16tpi thread ... then realized the drill rod I was cutting was .010" too big ... so I grabbed the minilathe and turned it down. Think I'll keep it on the shelf near the workbench.

    Still use your minilathe?

Been on here about a week. Really liking this board. (so unusual to find a supportive message board; on so many board, you post a message, then you duck.) I just got a new Grizzly 10x22 bench lathe - I've had a HF 7x10 mini-lathe for 2-3 years. So - for those of you who had a mini-lathe and...

    Scroll Saw

You can cut metal with a scroll saw. You need a good blade - I get mine here: http://www.scrollit.com/Olson%20Scroll%20Saw%20Blades/Olson%20Metal%20Cutting%20Blades.htm However, you really want a band saw. A variable speed outfit - here's the one I'm looking at getting...

Walking Beam Stirling kit cylinder concerns.

I got to looking at my kit & plans last night and you are correct - both pistons are 'pre-finished'. When I build my kit, I'm going to stick to the normal process - I'll make the cylinder first, and if the pre-finished piston doesn't fit, I'll just make a new one. Mine is a little tarnished...

Walking Beam Stirling kit cylinder concerns.

I got the same kit. For anyone interested, here's the link to the material kit complete with free PDF plans you can download: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Horizontal-Stirling-Engine-Kit/H8101 There are no castings - mostly bar stock, with some hex rod & flat bar and fasteners. It's metric...
