My "Flame Eater" ... boat anchor.

Greetings and frustrations, I designed and built this flame eater from scratch. As it turns out, that's what I ended up with... scratch. After many hours and revisions, I give up. Don't try to encourage me. Just let me sulk.

    If I ever ...

get this flame eater to eat, I'll post a pic. Until then,..

    Another flame eater question.

Holiday greetings from Florida, I designed and built my own flame eater. I should have paid more attention to the members that bemoaned their start up problems. I've read in other posts that if all is well I should get and audible "pop" when I turn it over without the burner. At what point in...

    Balancing a crankshaft.

I'm wondering about balancing a single cylinder crankshaft. I've "designed" and built a few engines myself . I've always balanced the crank by itself, out of the engine, on roller bearings. I'm building my first flame eater and perhaps a little over-concerned after reading other's accounts of...

    (2) right angle gear reducers... can someone use these?

Somewhere along the line I picked up these 2 right angle reducers. Way too big for my projects. One is a 1:45, the other is 1:50. Input shaft dia = .435"... metric? Output shaft dia = 18 mm... approximately. Collecting dust in my shop. $35.00 postage included.

    Flame eater intake consideration

I enjoy designing my own engines. I'm currently working on a flame eater and have the following question: One way or another, I'll need to control the intake. Cam, crank, eccentric... they all provide some type of linear motion. They can all be timed, but the "open/dwell/close" profile will be...

    DraftSight users: help needed

Years ago I worked with Auto Cad daily... (digitizer tablet for those my age). Fast forward 35 years, I'm retired and enjoy designing and machining as a hobby. A year or so ago, I downloaded Draftsight Free and find it satisfyingly sufficient for my needs. Predictably, I skipped over the basics...

    posting DraftSight selections

Maybe my title was confusing... sorry. I design my work using DraftSight 2D. I've got a design that I'd like critiqued. How do I attach it in a post? TIA Russ

Timing a vacuum engine... flame eater

I'm still stewing over which type valve arrangement to design into a flame eater. Regardless, common to all is valve timing. Is there a consensus on timing and duration? I assume a crank provides adequate "ramp" vs. a complex cam? Tia Russ

Does a graphite piston wear down?

General question. Mods, feel free to move this. I'm close to building my first flame eater. Many different designs, but I favor the graphite piston if for no other reason than it has less mass to change directions. I've purchase a chunk of graphite. Does it not wear quickly and change the...

    More confusion over flame lickers

I recently asked if I could scale up the Poppin flame eater. Now I've decided to design my own hybrid plan... hybrid inasmuch as I'll incorporate other's design elements. However, the more I research the more I "vasillate" (don't say that in mixed company). I recently was impressed with John...

Can I scale up the John-Tom Poppin plan

Thinking of building a flame licker. I understand that they can be "difficult" to function. I assume that means bore and stroke must be in proper proportion,...among other things. I like the little Poppin plans that are readily available but I cringe when I see 2-56 tapped holes. Not only do...

    DraftSight won't uninstall

Greetings, My Draftsight free CAD program "went south". I couldn't pull up my drawings or open the program. In frustration I attempted to delete the program and reinstall it. I went through the normal Control Panel procedures to uninstall. Apparently there are still parts of the program on my...

    My 1st beam engine

I spent my teen years in my dad's machine shop. Skip ahead 50 years thru marriage, moves, careers, kids, colleges, etc, and I bought a used Smithy 3 in 1 mill/lathe. Say what you will, but I found the machine to be capable and enjoyable. As Ray Wiley Hubbard says "And the days that I keep my...

Rant. I know we've all been there but damn.

Just snapped a 6-32 tap off in the last of 16 blind holes that I was tapping into an aluminum part. Dug it out, made a mess, but I think I can plunge an endmill into the part and plug it. Guess I'm going to bite the bullet and buy some decent spiral flute taps. Whoa, 20 bucks apiece! Rant...
