    How tight is tight enough?

I am having the same problem with my X2. For some reason though it is only with the drill chuck. Collets just about fall out from the wind of the deadblow coming at it, but the drill chuck won't budge until I threaten it with acetylene ;D Unfortunately, I destroyed the bearings. Pulled them...

What are good brands for cutters?

What brands do you guys/gals use milling and turning? I have almost no turning tools and some worn out import end mills. What do you recommend? I would like to avoid index-able tooling for now. Brazed carbide is probably my best bet since I have not had good luck grinding my own HSS and...

    Dead center and filing

I need to turn some 7/8" diam by 9" long pieces out of 1" 6061. I didn't get a live center when I bought my lathe (used). I'm assuming that I need to use some kind of oil/grease with the dead center. What should I use? I'm new to a lathe and haven't used a center yet. Any tips? I also need to...

    Question about lathe

Ed- Thanks for the tip. Didn't think of that. Pete- Do the rods actually increase the range? If I add a 2" rod to my 2" indicator do I get 4" of travel or still 2" of travel just 2" farther away?

    Question about lathe

I just picked up a G4000 lathe. I have never run one before. Is there supposed to be a scale or dial so you know where you are with the carriage (I think thats what its called, moves left to right)? The compound and cross slide have dials on the back of the hand wheels. Am I missing a part? It...

First some praise, then a question.

Tin- I did have the Z locked and then slid the column stop block up and locked it to make sure the head wasn't slipping down. I guess I worded the original post wrong making the finish seam most important. I will try using some lube next time and see if it improves. My question was about the...

First some praise, then a question.

Mainer- That's correct and I cant figure it out either. Picture this, you have a 6" diameter navigation compass that is perfectly flat laying on your table with North pointing at the column. North and South and reading .001 higher than East and West. I have the Swarfrat series for my mill. In...

First some praise, then a question.

ksouers- We were typing at the same time. I do have a 3" swivel base vise from LMS and well as some other tooling that I read were basic requirements. IE..... parallels, clamp kit, 123 blocks, edge finders etc.

First some praise, then a question.

Thanks for the fast replies. Stan- I was cutting dry. I do have some of the Kool Mist fluid from LMS. I'll try it next time. hobby and Tin Falcon- Speeds and feeds are something I need to learn. I'm going to order The Machinists Handbook next week now that I am actually using the mill. I have...

First some praise, then a question.

First off, I would just like to say that this is the friendliest and most helpful machining site I have come across. I found this a few weeks ago and have been checking it daily and learning a ton. I had been reading a few other boards for the past year (which I won't name) and quite honestly...
