    XP Xpired

I too was a XP hold out, but made the switch to Win 7 about 4 months ago. I've found it a fast solid performer, but takes a bit to get used to. Has lots of gimmicky stuff you can get rid of. My biggest complaint is the UAC, which I have disabled. Overall, I am happy with it. Built the computer...

    How do you Drill?

I use stub length drills without spotting almost all the time. With a little care starting, they're plenty accurate. For critical positions, I'll use a spotter. For really close positioning I'll drill an undersized hole and bore it in postion and usually to size.

Best use of soft jaws in the chuck?

Wow, this is the first time I've seen a chuck with a combination scroll and independent jaw adjustment built in! The best of both worlds. A cool alternative to set-tru chucks! Concentricity as close as you can indicate. There are many reasons to use soft jaws, but many times they are used to...

Finding the center on a pc. of round stock-milling machine tilted 45*

I would cut the V by "eyeballing" the corner of the cutting tool to a scribed mark on the stock. Take a cut and without changing your settings, flip it around 180 degrees and take another cut. You may want to make a slight adjustment to your settings at that point and then cut down to the depth...

    Grizzly Knurler Model H7571

Anybody have one of these knurlers from Grizzly? (Model H7571) What is your impression after using it? Thanks, Dave

    Suggestions?

Hi, Perhaps purchasing a short length of 1" - 8 threaded rod would take care of your needs. I know Enco has a good selection. Dave

thearing a part a micrometer? is posible??

Hi, For occasional use, it is easy to place a dowel or gage pin in ID of the tube and carefully measure with a standard mic while moving the pin around a bit to get it straight. A little math and you'll have the thickness of the wall. Sounds difficult, but you will quickly find this a handy...

putting a live center on your drill press

Lectrician- "also it works good to drill (small holes). from on point to another on an object. No matter how odd the shape or crazy the direction. Center punch the entrance and exit point. put one of them in the center and drill into the other point. when the hole is a little over half way...

    AC amps

Hi, As a follow up to my question, I've installed and have been running this 1 1/2 HP 90 volt 15.4 amp DC motor on my mill for about three weeks now. It is on a 20 amp circuit without any problems what so ever. Fully loaded the motor after installation by drilling several large holes in steel...

    Machining soft Jaws Lathe ?

Hi, I assume you want to bore an ID in the soft jaws. I've done this frequently by using a thin (1/8") 3 lobed cam disc than sits against the chuck face and is thin enough to be clamped by the master jaws while not touching the softjaws, allowing you to bore the jaws. The cams allow you to...

    AC amps

Thank you all for the responses! Think I'll try this setup on a 20 amp circuit before proceeding further. Dave

    AC amps

If I have a DC motor rated at 15.4 DC amps powered by a SCR type speed control that converts AC power to DC, how many AC amps would I expect to pull? Would it be the same or more? Thanks, DaveB

    RF31 mill drill

Got the spindle out of the machine, relatively easy to pull out. Looked up the bearings on Motion Industries and P5's are available at an impressive price. Looks like I'll go with a name brand standard tolerance bearing. Top cup was a slip fit in its bore, about .0005" or so, does not look like...

    RF31 mill drill

I have a RF31 mill drill and I need to replace the spindle bearings. A little stiff and heat build up. The mill has always left a scalloped finish when side milling only a few tenths deep. Easy enough to remove with emery or a file, but I would like to improve or eliminate it. I don't expect it...

    What cam ??

I use Sheetcam as well and I am very happy with it. It picks geometry by layer which has its plus and minuses. Writing code for parts where you can use the same operations is as easy as importing the new geometry and posting it ... if you "standardize" your layers. Very fast, easy one to learn!

How do you feel about using CNC?

Manual machining and CNC machining requires 2 different skill sets, and they also have overlapping skill areas. In a shop making one and two-sey parts (not mass production) they both have their place. Some things are faster/ easier on a manual and some are faster/easier on a CNC. The thing you...

What kind of brass do I have?

I think you have a chuck of aluminum bronze. It's not very user friendly. Sometimes used for bearing type applications and is corrosion resistant. Dave
