    Harbor Freight rotary table

Right off the bat I need it to round the cylinder housing for a Huff-n-Puff engine. (small) And I would like to build a rotary valve so I will need it for that. After that I have no idea what I would use it for. I don't mind taking it apart and fixing it as long as it can be fixed. I have HF's...

    X1 drawbar?

Well I was whackin' it enough that the chuck fell off of the taper, then a few more whacks and the taper finally fell came loose. How to I put the chuck back together, just press? Sorry for the noobie question...

    X1 drawbar?

Hello, I received my Harbor Freight Micro Mill (X1) yesterday and started cleaning. I un-screwed the drawbar a bit and gave it a few taps with a jeweler hammer. The chuck popped right out and I put in a collet and drawbar from Little Machine Shop. After I was done unscrewed and tapped it out...

PM Feb 1973 "Tiny Steam Engine" Anyone?

Ahh OK so 180 each, but they are 90 degrees to each other.

PM Feb 1973 "Tiny Steam Engine" Anyone?

More on the rotary valve. I see there are two grooves offset, but you can't tell in the drawing how far around each groove goes. Are they 180 degrees each? Do they overlap at all? Can anyone post a clearer drawing? Thanks Chris

    My second dumb question...

In my last photo if I had the tool post in the other slot then the carriage would hit the jaws of the chuck. but that idea did work in another situation.

    My second dumb question...

Excellent!!! Joe's idea seems to work for me: Maybe one day I can answer instead of ask... Thanks everybody!

    My second dumb question...

Ok I am making a crankshaft from 3/8" steel. The end of it needs to be turned down to 1/16", the plans say once you get down to 1/8" to support the end with the tail stock. Well how do I do that? The orange marks show the travel I would need back and forth so the tail stock is as far left as...

    Cutting a small flywheel

Thanks. I guess this topic should have been "How do I shape a bit", but either way I still learned a lot. Once my mill shows up one of the first things I plan is to cut a slot for a 1/8" bit on the other side of the tool holder.

    Cutting a small flywheel

I tried a second time trying not to take off so much. I didn't think the front needed rounding so I just tapered it slightly and rounded the one side. It worked with no chatter!!! Here are the pics. Keep in mine this bar is 1/8" square: My practice was with cutting brass. I need to make...

    Cutting a small flywheel

Thank you for the ideas. I just ground down the tip till it was about 1/32" wide and it looked good. The second it touched the tip popped right off like it was plastic. I'll keep trying...

    Cutting a small flywheel

OK I took a 1/8" tool bit and ground a radius to one side. That seems to give a good side cut, but the face of the bit is skipping. So I ground a relief under the tip of the tool and no luck it is still skipping at any speed. Here is a scrap of brass to try it out: A little over exposed, but...

    Cutting a small flywheel

Sounds like I need to learn how to shape too bits... I found this when I searched "trepanning tool" http://www.micromanufacturing.com/showthread.php?p=485 I have some old bits laying around to practice with. I don't think I could make a spoked flywheel. I wish it was this easy...

    Cutting a small flywheel

Hello, I'd like to make a "Huff n' Puff" small engine and now I have the plans and instructions. The one item not explained is the flywheel (probably because this is a simple part?) I understand how to turn it on the lathe and drill the holes, but I can not figure out how I would make the 1/16"...

    Very small engine

Thanks for the info. From that I found that the plans should also be in "Projects In Metal" Magazine Vol. 2 No.5 October 1989. I'm a newbie so plans are a big help for me. ;D
