How not to Do Backyard Metal Casting

I am looking at the metal mesh face shields and thinking they will stop molten iron like nothing is there. Molten iron looks too much like water to be stopped by metal mesh. Happy to be proven wrong.

How not to Do Backyard Metal Casting

Wear spats. The versions made for foundry/welding cover the boot laces.

    Eagle

I have also used Nitric acid but with all the problems above. Also Nitric acid is very dangerous. Take a lot of care if using it.

    Installing new lathe

Hi My Denford has 3 point supports for both the lathe on the stand and the stand to the ground. There is no adjustment for twist.

    Some questions about lathe

Hi The Denford Viceroy is definitely better built than the Boxfords. Hardened chrome bed, more/better accessories, separate lead/feed shafts as standard etc etc.

Yard sale find of the year

Hi This is easy to solve. Just send me the chuck and your problems are over. :)

    Wobble Plate Air Compressor

Hi Nice work. You should try it without the accumulator. I suspect you won't need it.

    Some questions about lathe

Hi I have been through the process of adjusting bearing pre-load on my Denford Viceroy lathe. Take a look at this link to see what I did Headstock bearing adjustment

    Installing new lathe

I have a Denford Viceroy and a much larger Nardini lathe. The lighter Denford sits on threaded rubber pads because it was too low for me. The heavier Nardini sits on 25mm dia threaded steel feet straight onto the concrete. No damage to the concrete. No vibration into the house through the...

    Uniflow design theory

Hi Take a look at Dan Gelbart's uniflow steam engine here. It sounds terrible, but is the best uniflow design I know of. If I was going to build a uniflow steam engine, I would build to the Dan Gelbart design.

Automatic boiler water level control system with phototransistor.

Hi Industrial control systems aim to identify failure modes (short, open circuit, failed sensor, stuck sensor, power failure, etc etc) to then identify a fail-safe response. The aim being to ensure that a failure brings the equipment to a safe mode of operation (which may include turning it off).

Automatic boiler water level control system with phototransistor.

I resemble that remark. I have a Masters Degree in Electronics Engineering, two lathes, a Deckel clone milling machine and a double garage too full of tools to fit a car. If you look in the world of 3D printers (for example) you will find many others like me. I like the idea of auto boiler...

    Wobble Plate Air Compressor

There is a theory that pulsed fuel flow creates balls of fuel that increase turbulence and the flame front surface area. Without evidence, I don't think it would be a good approach. I note that real gas turbines and steam boilers use constant fuel flow to maintain a steady flame. Pulsed...

    Casting kit business?

That is what I plan to do with other parts. For the part I have in mind, just making the wax pattern would be a challenge. I don't know if I can get wax filament that will work with my Prusa printer. I am not setup for investment casting, and to do so would cost me too many $$$$. I will...

    Casting kit business?

Hi I am currently drawing plans to build a miniature engine that has a part I cannot produce in a realistic manner. It has internal details that are too complex and too small to use a core. My plan is to have this particular part 3D printed, but I expect it will be $$$. This is a bit like...

Wanted WTB: Unimat 3, BEGGING for help.

Hi Take a look on lathes.co.uk and see what you are missing out on by limiting your choice to one. There are plenty of choices out there. Many are better and worse than Unimat. The thing is that a rare lathe/mill Unimat is likely to be more expensive than a separate mill and lathe, because...

    Wobble Plate Air Compressor

Hi This style is new enough that commercial use is limited by patents. The rollers are the only contact points, so roller material determines lubrication requirements. Typically the rollers are some sort of plastic.

    Wobble Plate Air Compressor

Hi Impressive. You have the machine tools to make a Guided Rotor Compressor (GRC). These are used full size for high reliability gas compressors. The geometry is reasonably complex, too complex to cut by hand, but mechanically very simple and highly reliable. The should scale down to any size.

    Poor mans slotting head

Hi It is easier/faster for me to make a tool for my slotter than than a wobble broach. In addition, a slotting tool is far more versatile. For a blind hole a wobble broach would still need clearance at the base of the hole.
