Column stiffeners and question about column to table perpendicular tramming

If your pulling point is near the top then you might put a slight curve in the column. If that was the case then the front to rear tram would vary depending on whether you had the head down low or up at the top. It would be interesting to see what the difference was by temping up a brace with...

How do I get a perpendicular hole?

Another thing to check is if the table is flexing downward as you are drilling. To stop the flex on my DP table I have a small automobile scissors jack that I run up to the bottom of the table when drilling critical things. Bill

    complete overhaul of x2

I used rectangular tubing for a revamp of my X2 and it worked out very well. See http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=8481.0 The square tubing you are thinking of should be more rigid than the channel. Bill

    pipe miter

Parallel Line Development If you have drafting tools this will be simple, if not it will just take a bit longer. Start with a straight horizontal line near the bottom. This will be the baseline. On one side draw your pipe to scale with the exact miter at the top, you can make this whatever...

    pipe miter

Anthony, If you are looking for a pattern to wrap around the pipe, use parallel line development. I'm a bit busy now, but I can sketch up a sample a little later to get you going. Bill

    Mill head counterweight ?

I added one to my modified X2 mill http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=8550.0 and am quite happy with the results. The counter weight on mine weighs the same as the mill head - 38#, to my way of thinking that adds weight. I also believe the center of gravity stays pretty...

Some basic X2 mods and first time use

Nice job on the brace Chris and welcome to the X2 club. Of course you know you won't be able to stop with just a brace, thats just the start. As soon as you start making things the need for all sorts of mods will come up, belt drive, dro's, I bet you already wish you had a power feed when you...

    Question for Websterz

Thanks for the info. Are you taking power for the motor from the 12v? Also, can you get decent speed for rapid traverses? Bill

    Question for Websterz

I've gotten a little further along with the PS, I hooked the drill motor up to the 5v post and it would run, albeit a tad slow. Using the DPDT switch I have wired it would switch foward and reverse okay, but only if I stopped in the off position first. If I switched without pausing it would...

    Question for Websterz

In a recent post you mentioned using a hacked computer power supply on your x-axis power feed. Could you fill me in on a couple of things? I just hacked a 250w ATX PS and installed posts for +12v, +5v and +3.3v. I also installed a load resistor. Multimeter readings show that I have power at the...

    Power feed for X3 mill

I'm not the best guy to give electronic help, but 20 watts max might be a little low. The bench power supply I am using goes from 0 to 15V and 0 to 10amp. If amps x volts = watts then that would be 0 to 150 watts. Now I never use the near the max, but I probably run more than 20 watts. I know...

    X2 mods finished

The small cw did make a difference. It was easier to raise the head after. My machine did have an annoying habit in whenever I used the fine adjustment to lower the head to the number I wanted the action of locking the gibs would drop it a couple more thou. The extra weight helped, but did not...

    X2 mods finished

Thats a good question and I'm not sure of the answer. My feeling is that even though the weight of both the mill head and counter weight are bearing on the pulleys at the top of the machine I don't think that means the actual weight is located at the top. It certainly doesn't feel top heavy...

    Power feed for X3 mill

Hi Bob, I made one from a 14.4 Dewalt and it has plenty of power, what power source are you using? Bill

    X2 mods finished

I now have the mill where I can start using it. The last thing done was to fab a mill-head counter-weight. I weighed the head with the motor installed, and it came out to 32#. To make the weight I used an old rusty piece of 3"x3" rectangular tubing I've been saving for just this sort of thing...
