    Stirling displacer, copper end thoughts

Working on a Stirling hot air engine. Making a displacer out of .018" thick stainless steel rolled into a tube. Diameter about 2.5" and about 10" long. If the hot end of the displacer had a silver brazed on copper end about 1/8 thick would it be a good or bad idea? Thinking it would make for...

Bad timing, bad valve, bad luck

Just finished Root & Vandervoort model hit n' miss. After much cranking it started for first time and reved up then a stop with a bang. Marvelous Marv's backbone tool

Built one of Marv Klotz's backbone tools for Dremel that he showed us. Had to do a trim cut a piece of .008" feel gauge today and needed the cut to come out close to what had marked out and not distort the feeler gauge. Marv's tool worked slick, Thanks for sharing Marv. Gary

    Unable to see some pictures.

Some pictures don't show up for me and some do. Guessing the pictures that don't appear are attachments. In Steamin's last post in "Boiler Build For American LaFrance Engine" he describes pictures but I don't see any. Have tried several different changes in Internet Explorer 8 security...

    Small socket wrenches

Hex socket wrenches made from socket head cap screws. Had posted this before on another forum. Know using socket head cap screws for wrench use has been posted here before. Just maybe a little different ideas here. Handles are ¼ hex stock, which works good. Don't roll on table easily and a ¼...

    Quick Change Grinder / Cut-Off / Buffer / &

Not to hijack Black85vette's sanding station but to give some ideas. Built this Quick Change grinder about 16 years ago. It has been working good for me. It is something that is used about everyday that I'm in the shop. It uses a 3/4" R-8 collet with draw bar. All the wheels are mounted on...

    Another tap handle

This is mainly a take off of Marv Klotz’s suggestion of using pin chucks for tap handles. Made these tap handles couple of months ago and they have been working good for me. They are made from 7/16-20 bolts, which had a surplus of. The hex head end is drilled for slip to sloppy fit for a...

    Salvaged bronze casting

Bronze smoke stack casting for a Coles American La France fire engine had this big gas pocket flaw. Milled out a pocket that got rid of most of it and used small burr and cleaned the deeper pockets. Made a plug from some bearing bronze that looked like a color match. Tried for a good fit...

    Screw holder for shortening screws

Shortening screws on belt sander works well and if screw is held concentrically it is easy to put a chamfer on the screw. Needed to shorten a 2-56 screw today so this is my side tracked project.

    Trying lost wax casting

Years ago started on making a 4 cylinder T-head engine called Simplex. Didn't get all the castings. Main ones missing were the 4 con rods. Wanting to do lost wax casting thought it would be a good place to start. This is my second try, first try didn't allow for shrinkage in the rubber mold...

Making raised letters by cold casting

Tried making some raised letters to get that cast look and it seems to work OK. Having a little homemade cnc mill was able to mill out some mirrored image letters about .040" deep in some 1/16" thick Teflon sheet that was handy. Believe there is a way to have made the same letters using a UV...
