    pickling solution

Citric acid is easy to obtain, just go to your local home brew store or go on the bay you can buy it by the kilo. Its a lot safer than battery acid and you can dispose of it down the drain when you have done with it.

    Westbury Heinrici Stirling engine

Hi Andrew, If you have airleaks in a stirling engine it will never run. I have a small one I made a few years ago and I can't get any commpression in it but can't find a leak anywhere. If the displacer is rattling about you need to remake the bushing and get as near perfect fit as you can. There...

    Westbury Heinrici Stirling engine

Hi Andrew, I bought a set of castings for this engine off ebay and it had a aliminum aircooled cylinder. I have since done a bit of research and found it was also made to be water cooled like the one you have. I really need to find some drawings to complete this engine as the book I have doesn't...

    Sieg X2 motor-problem.. SOLVED

Hi I have a seig XL1 I guess they are similar, I had that fault too and still have at times. What I did find out is that the fuse holder doesn't always make contact and will sometimes run slowly or not at all. I have gently bent the contacts inside the holder and replaced the fuse, most of the...

    Small nuts and fat fingers

Hi Small cap head screws make nice socket spanners for the small stuff and you don't have to worry that the nuts go too far in. Regards Metalmuncher.

Diamond Tool Holder On Ebay !!

Hi Those tools are overpriced for what they are, made the one that was in Model Engineers Workshop last month. It works fine from a roughing cut to shaving a whisker off. I could buy a decent set of castings for the price of one of them. Regards Metalmuncher.

    Silly invention?

Hi Foozer, Thats a really simple solution for a power hacksaw, the only thing I would say about it is it needs some weight on it so the blade doesn't bounce. Regards Metalmuncher.

stuart flywheel - making it run true

Rollajohn, I made the same mistake when I machined my 10V many moons ago, tried to correct it by remachining it but it looked terrible. In the end I just bought another casting and made a better job of it. Nothing like learning from your mistakes and its something you never do again. Regards...

stuart flywheel - making it run true

Hi, I can't agree with machining a flywheel casting all over. the only surfaces that need machining if its set to run true are the rim and both sides of it and the face of the hub. theres no point in using a casting if you are going to machine it all over you might just as well use barstock...

stuart flywheel - making it run true

Hi I'm just starting on machining a six inch flywheel for a hotair engine. The way I do it is line the inside of the rim up to run true, It doesn't matter so much about the hub being a little out as its not noticed so much. Hold a rod in the toolpost that way if you want to go between the spokes...

    Blow lamps

Hi I wouldn't use gasoline in it if its meant to burn paraffin much too dangerous. There should be a depression in the top of the body where you put a little meths in to preheat it. Make sure the jet is clear before you try lighting it or you will have a flame thrower. Hope this helps and be...

    Humour

This will probably be understood better if you live in England, Keith. Mr Cadbury met Miss Rowntree on a Double Decker. It was just After Eight. They got off at Quality Street . He asked her name. "Polo, I'm the one with the hole" she said with a Wispa. "I'm Marathon , the one with the nuts" he...

Thanks for posting this, looks like it could be an interesting programme. We need more stuff like this instead of the crap we get now. We need a new Fred to carry on showing us what this country was good at. Regards Keith.

Great little engine you have made, but it would be nice to hear it sucking and blowing instead of the music. Regards Metalmuncher.

Getting the most from your Dremel

Hi Marv, Thats a great little gizmo, set up at the right angles and with an endmill in a square holder you could sharpen or at least just tickle the edges up. Save a lot of time and money on building a tool and cutter grinder. Regards Metalmuncher.

    Power hacksaw

Hi Kevin I made a power hacksaw that was in one of the first issues of MEW, it sure saves a lot of sweat. I have hacked though 4inch round brass bar with mine, it took a while but it was a nice straight cut better than handsawing. Regards metalmuncher.
