PM research red wing air cooled drawings

Hi I have been thinking about how to do the air cooled Red Wing engine on my 9 x 20 lathe. I was thinking about doing the bore as a line bore operation, moving the cylinder mounted on the carriage. So I am looking for a set of print / instructions. I would buy a used set of prints from...

    Hit or miss engine igniter

Hi Does this look normal for these coils?

    Hit or miss engine igniter

The coil I just built measured 7 ohms I will try to see what kind of sparks it generates. Dennis

    Hit or miss engine igniter

Hi My start on a coil for an igniter. I had some brass and a length of cast iron rod. After silver solder to hold the brass to the cast rod and truing up the brass I coated the cast rod and brass with some epoxy to insulate the enameled wire. The epoxy is hardening on the wire while I took this...

    Hit or miss engine igniter

Hi Back emf. which is why a capacitor is needed in a points high tension ignition system. I remember the old days when a car would need new points when they got eroded from arcing when a cap went bad. Probably the points in a igniter could benefit from a cover bead of silver solder since...

    Hit or miss engine igniter

I have some cast iron rod 5 1/2 x .840 diameter. What wire size do you think for the coil. I know too thin is hard to handle I have previously wound some coils on my mini lathe. It will spin slow and steady. THanks Dennis

    Hit or miss engine igniter

Hi I am thinking about starting an engine with an igniter. The mechanical switch in the cylinder is fairly simple. Does any one have guidance or plans for the inductor coil. THe coils I read about call for soft iron. Will some of the leaded steels be soft enough or do I have to hunt up some...

Model hit or miss ignition fail

Hi I finally got a full run on the engine, tank full to empty. I am running the original Champion VR 2 plug. This plug has a central point. The spark jumps to the thread edge. The corian plug, the central pin went almost to the thread edge. A "J" shape. .a very short spark gap. They called this...

Model hit or miss ignition fail

I got the new spark plug. I was surprised to find if the new plug was screwed in tight it was hit by the piston. I drilled out a #10 flat washer to 1/4 and that was space enough to stop the interference. The mix had to be enriched some to get the plug to fire.

Model hit or miss ignition fail

Hi I have had the head off several time playing with the intake valve spring. The carbon was very soft and when I got the mix very rich the gas would flush off the carbon. Since then I have washed the plug with a solvent and blew the end with high pressure air. This cleaned enough carbon out of...

Model hit or miss ignition fail

Hi THe red print on the ceramic say Champion :<) Sorry about the poor close ups From the comments these pics will show the size of the plug. I have a similar plug coming with a plastic insulator. Remember the threads are 1/4" x 32 TPI

Model hit or miss ignition fail

Hi The plug in this engine has a thread size of 1/4" xx 32threads per inch. This is a non standard plug

Model hit or miss ignition fail

Hi Stretching the intake spring was a success. It was and does not now move during the idle strokes. Only when it should fire does the intake move. Soot in the spark plug can prevent proper firing. I have proved this a number of time by blowing the soot out of the plug
