    An idea for a tachometer

An even simpler method for a tachometer is to use a digital bicycle speedometer. About $4.00 U.S. from the internet. Mine's been on the lathe for about 2 years and still going great on the original button battery. If anyone wants instructions, I'll be glad to email them. Art

    Felt?

I bought a pair of felt insoles for boots at Workwear World (here in Canada) several years ago and have enough for both my lathe and milling machine to last me the rest of my life.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll try the super-glue idea.

    Need Help

I need to fabricate 4 small brass disks as shown on the attachment (metric measurements). I don/t have any brass round stock to cut slices from. All I have is a piece of brass strip 14mm wide x 250mm long x 2mm thick. Anyone have a suggestion on how to accurately make these disks from the...

    Tap drill chart

I made up the attached chart years ago when I first started into hobby machining. It's an all-in-one chart that provides what you wanted, plus a visual metric/imperial cross-reference. If you don't have a set of metric drills for example the chart will show you a very close imperial size. The...

    Jacobs tapers

I should have mentioned; the mill has an R8 spindle and the lathe an MT3, so I'll need two chuck adapters. As far as buying the chuck of my choice the getting adapters to match it, that's my plan. The reason I asked the original question is that Enco seems to have about the best prices on...

    Jacobs tapers

I have a Sieg SX3 mill and a Sieg C6 lathe, neither one of which is a very robust machine, but satisfy my needs. I am not happy with the drill chucks on either machine, so I'm going to buy one quality 1/16-1/2 chuck for use on both machines. I would like to hear the pros and cons of the various...

    Sieg C6 Modifications

Steve, If you haven't already, you might want to address your question to one of the Yahoo lathe groups that seem somewhat oriented to the Sieg C6 lathe. I'd suggest trying the G0516 group first. It's not very active, but there are a lot of 'lurkers' there that have had the C6/Grizzly0516 for a...

    more grinding and suction

If you're curious about building a 'cyclonic' type dust collector, you should read this: http://www.floweringelbow.co.uk/projects/the-cyclone-dust-separator/cyclonic-dust-separator-overview/ . Lots of information and detailed instructions in the links shown on the right-side of the page.

    Center drills!

A good starting point for answering your initial question is the attached chart. It's in fractions, but can easily be converted to metric.

    mini lathe cross slide gibs

This reply doesn't exactly answer VPH's question, but is something to consider. The experts' (not me) recommend that gibs be made from cast iron because of its stiffness and integral lubricant. However they must be made from 'seasoned' cast iron, otherwise they will warp after machining. The...

    Why didn't I know this?

Some time ago, I made up a chart similiar to Bob's, but with drill sizes and tap-drill info. I use it almost every time I'm in the shop. I've attached a PDF copy, but have the original excel format if anyone would like it.

    Miniature tap wrenches

LMS has a good buy on a miniature tap wrench set this week. It'd pretty tough to broach a square hole, knurl, then anodize two of these for anywhere near the cost. SEE ATCH>

    Tool-bit Shape

I have a requirement to cut very fine external threads on a small diameter portion of a workpiece. Because interference with the workpiece is a problem, I want to use a small HSS toolbit; 5/16”. Searching in older machining books, I’ve found two toolbit shapes that seem be suitable (A & B...

    New here....with a rust problem.

Cadillacman If the machine does in fact have a lot of rust, you should continue to explore the electrolytic rust removal process. There's nothing that does such a good job of removing rust in nooks and crannies without any damage to the base metal. On the internet there's an example of a...

Lathe tool grinding rest / guide ?

Actually, his use of the drill press with its lower rpm is a wise choice. Use of a high rpm (such as a bench grinder or higher) will destroy the diamond wheel in short order when used on HSS because of the heat generated.

Need some help on buying a new Mill!

Richard, If you plan on tearing-down your 0619 mill to clean it and touch-up the rough spots left behind by Sieg's poor quality contol, I suggest you go to Arc-Eurotrade's web site. They're the UK dealer for the X3 and SX3(Grizzly 0619) mills. They have an excellent downloadable pictorial on...

    Grinding Wheels

The Home Machinist Forum has a couple of excellent discussions on this subject as 'stickies' on this page: http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=5f04b2a6d775ed0688cc672e00073773 Some of the posts are by very experienced people. Though not cheap, I've had great success with...
