    Wyvern Engine Ignition

Hello bluejets, We have ignition! I had the wiring wrongly connected. Best of all I retried the original components and they work so my search for replacements is over. Lift off may be tomorrow. Thanks for your help, Rob

    Wyvern Engine Ignition

Thanks Cogsy , couldn't be simpler when you know how. The photo shows the coil and condenser that I would like to replicate. The wires were disconnected and in bad shape and I replaced them, hopefully in the right way. I plan to remove the connector block and replace with a two pin plug from...

    Wyvern Engine Ignition

Hello bluejets, Thank you for your reply, I did read the connected attachment to your reply and looked at your impressive engine photograph. In my last reply I searched for a way to add a photo from "my pictures" to illustrate the original arrangement on the Wyvern but failed, with each attempt...

    Wyvern Engine Ignition

Thank you for the replies Rudy and bluejets, the use of a separate box containing battery, coil and capacitor is a last resort. I would like to restore the engine to a configuration similar to that used by the original builder having a coil and capacitor mounted on the baseboard. If a suitable...

    Wyvern Engine Ignition

Can anyone please recommend sources for suitable coil and capacitor components for a petrol driven E.T. Westbury Wyvern engine? Nothing fancy, no piezo or magneto systems and preferably a capacitor that looks old style rather than a piece of Lego.

    If I ever ...

As a chemist working in a research laboratory we used absolute alcohol (100%) occasionally for synthesis. Each usage was recorded in a log for the Customs and Excise and the log always showed increased usage near the lab Christmas party. No one could drink it neat because it burned the mouth...

Flame Eaters running on alcohol need 96% + pure alcohol and preferably 98%, could be your problem. Tried methylated spirit and it won't work on mine.

    First sand casting

Hello Arild, Foseco Sweden are based in Ed not far from the Norwegian border and they would probably give samples of Sodium Silicate. A common name for S.Sil. is Water Glass, pharmacies used to stock it. You could also try begging samples from a jobbing foundry. I like S.Sil. systems for the low...

    First sand casting

Hello, As a chemist in a foundry supply company "Foseco" the biggest in the world, I gained a lot of experience in core and mould binder systems for sand castings, refractory mould and core coatings, casting defects from all causes (important to know because if a defect occurs a foundryman will...

    First sand casting

That first picture, if it is "as cast", is superb. You must have de-gassed the aluminium and removed dross in the ladle well to produce that surface quality, especially from greensand. The casting is well above commercial castings.

    Stuart Turner Sun drawings?

Hello Jasonb, I just tried zooming and couldn't make it happen. Do you have the original net address? Rob

    Stuart Turner Sun drawings?

Hello Jasonb, Thank you for your prompt reply; compared with taking dimensions from photographs of components, the drawing is a huge improvement in precision. I owe you a beer. Rob

    Stuart Turner Sun drawings?

Hello I also need drawings of the Stuart Turner Sun engine having purchased rough base, block and head castings. Jasonb replied in May this year that there were drawings on the net that were high res. I've searched everywhere using all sorts of related terms and found a valve 'piston' drawing...
