    Rider Ericsson set up help.

You're right, I get mine from the Liquor store :) I will look for the instructions, I haven't seen them in quite a while, and if I can find them I will scan them into a PDF. I'm glad to hear it runs, it's very interesting to watch. Thx MikeR C

    Rider Ericsson set up help.

When you say you took it apart and oiled it, did you also oil the piston? Assuming you did, you might consider taking it apart and washing the oil off the piston and the displacer. Reassemble it and only oil the pivots with just the tiniest bit of oil on the displacer rod where it goes thru the...

    Craftsman 6" lathe help needed

Is this what you are looking for? I measured it up, the large radius will have to match the radius on ring around the toolpost. Good luck! MikeR C

    'Poppin' Flame Licker Engine

Nick, Congratulations, it came out great! I am interested in hearing how the graphite performs over time. I don't know if you are aware of an article in Live Steam where someone sent in an additional head that traps the valve so it doesn't fly around so much like so: Side view: Doing this...

    Scale implement plans?

Those are fabulous! I too would be interested in the drawings. I searched and I didn't see a build thread on any of them. Good job! MikeRC

    Coming along nicely

Fingers, I have a poppin with CI cylinder and CI piston. After it was finished I ran it a couple of times and like you I would have to take it apart and clean the brown "stuff" that the alcohol left in the cylinder. I discussed this with with Mr. Senft via e-mail and he said that with metal...

clearing chips out of tapped holes.

Maybe I misread the first post. I was assuming he was cleaning out the freshly tapped holes not cleaning off the machine. I wouldn't use starting fluid IN the shop. For cleaning off the machines I am in the vacuum camp, then use WD-40 to wipe things down. Gets rid of those small pesky dull tools...

clearing chips out of tapped holes.

Starting fluid. Dries as fast as brake cleaner, can force a WD-40 tube into the nozzle for cleaning holes, the kind without upper lube is a pretty good degreaser. Even with the lube it pretty much cleans off oil and grease. Not particularly toxic but, obviously, very flammable so you have to use...

I'd like to build a simple boiler

Gentlemen, Thank you very much for the replies. I guess I had in my head one of the boilers with furnaces that mostly cover the boiler shells. I completely understand making the caps so they have a scale appearance as opposed to using the pipe caps. I make all my own nuts and bolts, using...

I'd like to build a simple boiler

Actually, I too have wondered why ends are hand made. Pretty much every size copper pipe has a corresponding "pipe cap" to fit. I realize that it fits on the outside of the pipe (boiler shell) instead of inside but it has plenty of overlap and is as thick as the pipe it fits. It would lend...

    poppin thank you

Good looking engine! I have a soft spot for poppins, and yours looks great. Congratulations, MikeR C

    Poppin

Good looking cylinder. Have you decided what you are going to use for piston material? I used cast iron so it would be the same as the cylinder but if I build another I would like to try graphite so I wouldn't need the oiler while it is running. Good luck with the rest of your build! MikeR C

    Poppin vacuum engine cylinder head

I built a poppin', and corresponded with Mr. Senft as I was building it, he recommended stainless steel for heat conduction and corrosion reasons. He also reiterated the need for the sharp edges around the hole to stop turbulence as the flame is drawn into the cylinder. I made my head in...

    Poppin' on Cart

5-10 min sounds about right. i don't try to flip it all the way over. I just turn the flywheel so it sucks the fire in then let it bounce back. After flipping it this way for a while it begins to oscillate on it own and after a bit of that if you flip the flywheel so it makes over center it will...

    'Poppin' Flame Licker Engine

Nick, I sympathise with the "I'm getting bored of multiple parts" thing. A while back I started the "Miser" low temp stirling from Jerry Howell. Unfortunately, I decided that since it was the setup that takes the time, I would make six. What I forgot was all the hand work involved in finishing...
